Irene Steele Obituary
Irene Steele, 95, of Lawrence, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Neuvant House in Lawrence. She was born October 17, 1917 in Douglas Co., KS, the daughter of Russell and Ada Goff Harrell. Irene graduated from Lawrence High School. She was a member of the Stull United Methodist Church and the Douglas County Kanwaka Literary Club. Irene married George Steele on November 12, 1935 in St. Joseph, MO. He preceded her in death on September 25, 1997. Also preceding her in death was her son, James Steele of Evergreen, CO on December 17, 2007. Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Adelberg of Coral Springs, FL, one grandson, Ben Adelberg of Boynton Beach, FL, her daughter-in-law, Peggy Steele of Evergreen, CO and two brothers, Alvin Harrell and Leslie Harrell, both of Lawrence, KS. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Stull United Methodist Church. The family requests all attending to join them for refreshments following the service. Private inurnment will take place in Clinton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Kanwaka Fire Department c/o Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave., Topeka, KS 66605. Irene had enjoyed knowing a lot of International students. I am glad that I am one of them.
Every year she invited students to celebrate Traditional American Thanksgiving Dinner. One time there were 30 students having Thanksgiving Dinner at her house with her late husband George.
It was filled with laugh and love.
Her love, generosity and attention to each students is something that I will always remember.

Sandy,I have wonderful memories of your mother on visits to Kansas in the Summer.
Sandy and family I have fun memories of Irene and Mom in 2007.They spent a day together and had ice cream and peaches for dinner. They celebrated Uncle Earl and Aunt Marie's 50th anniversary together at dinner in Lawrence. She enriched my life and Mom's with her smile.
