Howard Martin Rosenfeld

Howard Martin Rosenfeld passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas, after a brief, but valiant battle with cancer. He was 78 years old. Services will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence, Kansas.

Howard was born on March 25, 1934, in Portland, Oregon, the son of Benjamin Rosenfeld and Miriam (Dubiver) Rosenfeld. He attended Grant High School and then went to Stanford University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with highest distinction in 1956. From there, he ventured east to attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he received his Masters in Psychology in 1958 and his Doctorate in Social Psychology in 1961.

It was in Ann Arbor where Howard met Beverly Glick who charmed and won his head and heart, and after getting married there and honeymooning in the Bahamas, they moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where he was hired as an Assistant Professor of Psychology and as Research Associate in the Bureau of Child Research at the University of Kansas, and then became a full professor in the Departments of Psychology and Human Development. His honors included Phi Beta Kappa; National Woodrow Wilson Fellowship; National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship; NIMH Special Research Fellowship; and Fellow, American Psychological Association. He was also a member of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, the Society for Research in Child Development, the American Association of University Professors, the KUEA Chancellor's Club and the Lawrence Jewish Community Center. In addition, during his tenure at the University of Kansas, his extensive research was widely published in professional and academic journals.

Howard was known not only for his academic prowess, but his droll sense of humor - quick with a limerick, a pun, a good joke - and also his skills in ping-pong and Scrabble. He enjoyed hiking in the woods and on mountains, finding beauty in nature and wildlife, and capturing it through his amazing photographs. He was a talented musician and an avid fan of the arts, enjoying everything from Woody Guthrie to Woody Allen, Brubeck to the Beatles, Chagall to Chihuly and Kurt Vonnegut to Jules Feiffer.

Howard enjoyed traveling, and especially loved spending time in Carmel Valley and walking the beach with Beverly and his beloved Sheltie dog, Minnie.

But most of all, he was delighted and inspired by family and friends, near and far.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Lloyd.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly (Lawrence); daughter Shelle Rosenfeld and son-in-law Jeff Kuhr (Lawrence); daughter Lisa Rosenfeld (Chandler, AZ); daughter Jessica Rosenfeld (Albany, CA); and his grandchildren: Gabrielle, Jeremy, Joshua, Genevieve and Jacoby Geenen (Chandler, AZ), Noam Rosenfeld (Albany, CA), as well as many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
