Hazel Lauppe Obituary
Marceil married George Merrill Lauppe on December 27, 1955, in Burden, Kansas. Together they enjoyed a family reunion every year, vacations and traveling. Together, they did a trip to Hawaii, and also drove their 1929 Model A to the Arctic Circle and back.
Marceil earned her RN degree from Wesley School of Nursing on September 7, 1956. Over the years, she worked at Winfield State Hospital, Topeka State Hospital, and the 1st United Methodist Church Preschool. She was a VNA Nurse from 1968 to 1980. She then became the Executive Director of the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association from 1980 to 2002.
Marceil enjoyed making quilts. She made over 100 quilts for family members, friends and donations. She also made 17 table runners and 6 baby quilts for family. She would also donate her quilts to others who were in need. For the 1st United Methodist Church of Lawrence, she would collect food, volunteer for Sunday School, and deposit the offerings every Monday for the Church.
She is the past president, vice president and treasurer of the Kansas Home Care Association and a member of the Kansas Department of Aging and Council for Client Assessment, Referral and Evaluation. She served on the board chair of the Community Drop In Center from 2002 to 2004 and as a board member of the Lawrence Community Shelter. Among those, she served on the United Way of Douglas County Allocation Committee and was the United Methodist Women Social Action Mission Coordinator.
Marceil received several honors, including the Lawrence Board of Realtors Humanitarian Award in 2003 and the 1991 Florence J. Nelson Outstanding Employer Award from the Kansas State Nurses Association. In 2023, she was inducted into the Kansas Homecare and Hospice Association Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her son, George (Annette) Lauppe, Manhattan; daughter, Sonya (Dale) Anders, Chapman; grandchildren, Shane (Andrea) Lauppe, Craig (Lindsay) Lauppe, Austin Anders, Aaron (MiKayla) Anders, Augustus (Kristen) Anders; great-grandchildren, Owen, Cora, Everly, Harper, Adam and AuRoara.
Marceil was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband George, and her sister, Claudine Mae (Ring) Lundy.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 10, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, 946 Vermont Street in Lawrence, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made out to the First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association, Marceil Lauppe VNA Scholarship Fund, or the Lawrence Homeless Community Shelter, in care of Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502

Monty & Sonya and Families, May God Bless You at this time of sorrow. I had the priviledge of working with Marceil when I was the Executive Director of VNA from 1977 to1980. I commuted from Topeka. Marceil and I shared an octagon-shaped office in a previous insurance building, with the Douglas County Health Dept. We each had our own desks that connected along the front of each others, so we faced each other. I have such fond memories of how we both managed to get our work done. One memory in particular was when we were both at our desks and I was concentrating on the VNA budget. My telephone rang & when I answered, it was Marceil. She said: " Jan, I have been trying to get your attention for almost 10 min. & you won't look up." We both laughed & hung up & talked. Marceil was a remarkable, capable, kind person & I feel Blessed to have known her as a co-worker & friend. After I left in 1980, & she became the Executive Director, we continued to meet with each other montly at a Lawrnce Restaurant over lunch, for several years. Janice Johnson White often joined us. Knowing Marceil as the leader of the VNA, as a board member, I can say she was a practical visionary. Douglas Countians are blessed with a great service today because of the nurturing of the agency by Marceil. She humbly approached each person and had concern for not only the patients in the community but for her staff. She, along with Sandra Shaw and Kay Kent, working together designed the Community Health Building that houses the Health Department, the VNA and Bert Nash. Best of all, she was a gem of a human being. I have been blest to have known her . Peace to all her relatives and friends.

Marceil headed VNA when I was on the United Way board and there was not a better leader of any agency. She was appreciated by those with whom she worked and especially by the clients and their families who were served by VNA during her leadership. She was irreplaceable.
