Geneva Weston Obituary

Memorial services for Geneva (Genny) Weston, 91, will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO at a later date. She passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living.

Genny was born on July 23, 1925 in Gypsum, KS, the daughter of Lawrence and Cora (Andrew) Swisher. She graduated from Gypsum High School in 1943 and worked for a time in the aircraft factories in Wichita as part of the war effort. She enlisted in the Navy, and was in the WAVES, serving as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class. After the war, she used her GI Bill benefits to enroll at Denver University (DU) in Denver, CO, eventually receiving her Master's Degree in Home Economics. While there, she met a Navy veteran from Georgia named Warren (Wally) Weston. They were married in Denver on December 14, 1948. Wally passed away on October 1, 2010.

Genny spent most of her life in the Denver area, where she and Wally raised three children: Tim, Marcus and Patty. Throughout her life she remained devoted to all of her extended family as well as a wide circle of friends. She was also passionately devoted to politics, and to voting rights. She was a life member of the League of Women Voters, and a long-time activist in the Colorado Democratic Party. She also loved nature, particularly the spectacular high-altitude beauty of the Colorado Rockies, where she and Wally spent as much time as possible.

Survivors include her son, Tim Weston (Marianne) of Lawrence, KS; daughter, Patty Cusick (Dan) of Gig Harbor, WA; daughter-in-law, Debbie Weston of Las Animas, CO; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Irene Eitner of Lawrence, KS; and two brothers, Leonard Swisher (Inge) of Reno, NV and Dwight Swisher (Donna) of Salina, KS. She was also preceded in death by her son, Marcus Weston, on November 17, 2015.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the League of Women Voters of Lawrence/Douglas County and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

I was privileged to know Genny through the book club at Pioneer Ridge and after I joined the League of Women Voters, was delighted to find her a member. Not just a member but a "life" member, meaning 50 plus years of membership. Our conversations were always spirited, laced with humor and a meeting of kindred spirits. She will remain an inspiration to me and an example of how to stay connected throughout one's life. My condolences to her family. We have lost a treasure.

I got to meet Geneva at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living when my father, Bill Pendleton, lived there. She was sweet and fun to talk with, and was among the military honorees in 2014. God bless her, and may He comfort all her loved ones.
