Gene Johannes Obituary

William Eugene (Gene) Johannes passed on October 30, 2021 at Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO. Born in Ottawa, KS August 15, 1946 and raised in Newton, KS, he called Lawrence home since 1964. Generous and caring, he would give you the shirt off of his back even if it was the only shirt he owned. After battling numerous health challenges for the last 15 years, he is now at peace and no longer in pain.

Gene is survived in Lawrence by his beloved Rosanna Wininger and two sisters, Charlotte Duffield (Gilbert, AZ) and Marlene Cordry (Over- land Park, KS).

Typical of the Gene we all knew, he wanted no memorial service of any kind and we honor his wishes. We only ask that you keep Gene and his family in your thoughts and prayers. He will be missed by many.

To me, Gene was a kind and gentle man. My wife and I enjoyed a balloon ride, an ice hockey game and Phantom of the Opera with him and with Rosanna. Such enjoyable memories.

Gene made an indelible impression on my life. When I remember my time at KU, you always come to my mind first. You introduced me to Charlie Pride music . You shared one of your mom's chocolate cake recipes with me. I remember you today with a great big smile and happiness that you were an important and impressive part of my life.

I just learned about Gene's passing. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Gene and I were friends when we lived in McCollum Hall while attending KU. He was so much fun to be around and we shared a love of sports. His smile would light up a room. The last time I saw Gene was at a KU basketball game in Kansas City. We happened to be sitting in the same row and at half time we got together to catch up. I am so sorry that he had medical challenges but those of us who knew him will never forget him. Rest In Peace my dear friend.

I too have been thinking about Gene this week. I loved his honesty and values. I wish the best to Rosanna and his sisters.

Even though I hadn't talked or seen Gene much these last few years I still consider him one of my closest friends.

From the time I first met him in 1996, he left an impression of friendship with me that I have tried to emulate in my life ever since.

I remember when my wife and I asked him to be the godfather to our son he seemed so honored and proud to do it even though he was hesitant.

I will never forget him and the many hockey games that we attended.

My prayers go out to Rosanna and Gene's sisters.

Gene was a wonderful, kind man. He had integrity. My heart felt condolences to Rosanna and Gene's sisters. I have wonderful memories of a balloon flight with Gene and also seeing Phantom of the Opera and a ice hockey game with him and with Rosanna. He was a good example to all who knew him.

When I graduated from High School, I lived with Genes parents in Ottawa. Gene was 5 years younger than me. I have lots of memories of Gene, Charlotte and Marlene. So sorry to hear of his health issues and his passing. He will be greatly missed by many. Wayne and Marie Linder

What a joy it was to see Gene and get that big bear hug at family gatherings. His smile, kindness and wit will certainly be missed. Prayers for you all.

Gene was a delightful person! His sidekick Rosie was his life! To say he was a friend is not enough. Till we meet again Gene your life was meaningful to all!
