Fred Stumbo Obituary

Fred L. Stumbo

Graveside service with military honors for Fred L. Stumbo, 90, Lawrence will be 2 pm Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012 at Oak Hill Cemetery's Veterans section. His brother, Floyd Stumbo will officiate. Mr. Stumbo died Sunday, September 9, 2012 at his home.

He was born March 3, 1922 in Allen County, KS, the son of Ernest L. & Jewel Grizzle Stumbo.

Mr. Stumbo attended grade school in Allen County and graduated in 1940 from Moran High School, Moran, KS. He served in the US Army -5th. Division, serving in Europe from 1942 to 1945. After returning from the war he attended Pittsburg State University and graduated with Honors receiving a Industrial Education degree in 1951.

Mr. Stumbo was a member of Southside Church of Christ and a lifetime member of the Alford-Clarke Post #852 of the V.F.W. Lawrence.

He served as Maintenance Manager of Shawnee Mission High School District from 1951 to 1961. Mr. Stumbo opened and operated Douglas County Wood Products Company and ran it from 1961 to 1977.

He married Dorothy L. Settles in 1946. She survives of the home. Other survivors include 2 sons, Michael Stumbo of South Freeport, ME; Don Stumbo of Iowa City, IA; 2 daughters Sandy Low of Las Vegas; Linda Gray of Bakewell, England; a brother Floyd Stumbo of Lubbock, TX; 2 sisters, Dorothy Bergmark of Aurora, NE, Lillian Nealeigh of Casper, WY; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Friday noon to 8pm. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Southside Church of Christ or D.A.V. in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana, Lawrence, KS 66044
