Florence Foster Obituary

Florence Rebecca "Becky" Foster

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and quiet force of nature

Becky Foster, known affectionately as "Beebe" by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Monday May 19, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and community member, Becky was a woman of extraordinary strength, deep love, and unwavering support.

Born in Houston, Texas on September 25, 1941, Becky would attend Lamar High School, and matriculate to the University of Texas, where she met the love of her life, Robert "Bobby" Foster, then President of the Longhorn Band. Their courtship was uniquely intertwined with Texas history and politics, as Becky's parents shared a close relationship with U.S. Senator Ralph Yarborough. Through Becky's introduction and the Senator's assistance, the Longhorn Band was invited to perform at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy - a significant moment that marked the beginning of a love story spanning over six decades.

In 1961, Becky left the University of Texas to marry Bob and begin their life together. Becky's fierce devotion to Bob, and her behind-the-scenes support of his distinguished academic and musical career, were cornerstones of their remarkable partnership. As Bob ascended to lead every major organization in the university band world, Becky stood beside him as his quiet rock, counselor, and steadfast advocate.

Their journey took them from Houston, TX to Gainesville, Florida, where they formed lifelong friendships at the University of Florida in music and academic circles, and eventually to Lawrence, Kansas, in 1971 - a place that would become their forever home. There, they raised their three children -Becky, Robert Jr., and Randall - and embraced all that Kansas life had to offer, from 4-H fairs to farm animals and especially the University of Kansas and the Fighting Jayhawks.

Though a city girl raised as an only child, Becky adapted beautifully to country life. Her home five miles south of Lawrence was filled with joy, adventure, and - often - baby animals. Whether it was hamsters, kittens, ducks, peacocks, calves, or a surprise goat or mule from the Saturday auction, Becky welcomed them all with good humor and gentle care (though the goats were quickly returned after climbing onto the family's cars!). Her love for animals, especially babies of all kinds, was legendary.

She was also fiercely loyal to all things Jayhawk. Her closet overflowed with crimson and blue - and family members knew better than to buy her anything purple. Her dedication to the University of Kansas extended beyond school spirit; she returned to KU once her children were grown, to complete a degree in Women's Studies in 1987- a moment of immense pride for the entire family.

Smart, strong-willed, and endlessly giving, Becky was the ultimate cheerleader and champion for her children and grandchildren. She always believed in their dreams and never missed an opportunity to encourage them. When her son Rob considered walking on to the KU football team, she struck a deal: if he made the team, she'd buy him a bulldog puppy. He did - and the family welcomed Otserf ("Foster" mixed-up), one of many beloved pets.

Becky loved flowers and gardening, a passion passed down from her mother and shared with her children. Orchids were her favorite. Christmas in the Foster house-hold was magical- a time of wonder and joy marked by thoughtfully chosen gifts, each wrapped with ornate bows, a tradition inherited from her father, Jack. Her grandchildren wouldn't dream of spending the holiday anywhere else.

Becky's professional contributions were as impressive as her personal ones. She served as Wakarusa Township Clerk after winning local office, and for many years was the trusted bookkeeper at Plymouth Congregational Church, a vital part of Lawrence's civic and spiritual fabric, until her retirement in 2019.

Through it all, Becky remained devoted to her family - the center of her world. Her love was unwavering and generous, her presence calming, and her wisdom ever-present. She believed in the success of others more than in her own recognition and made it her life's mission to lift those around her.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert E.; her daughter Becky Foster Egan and husband Peter, and their children Kieran and Cameron; her son Robert Foster Jr. and wife Kelley, and their children Dylan and Ragan; and her son Randall "Randy" Foster and wife Emily, and their daughters Harper and Stella.

Becky's greatest gift was the love she showed continuously, without condition or expectation. She will be remembered as a quiet force of nature - one who built others up, found joy in their achievements, and lived a life defined by love, loyalty, and grace.

A visitation will be held at Warren-McElwain Mortuary on Tuesday, June 3 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

A Memorial Service will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church on Wednesday, June 4 at 3:00pm. Internment at Pioneer Cemetery to follow immediately after.

When I was very young I was the babysitter for the Foster children for many years. Becky and Bob were a beautiful loving couple. There was always Jayhawk memorabilia in the house and I can remember the KU flags Becky was making downstairs that she wanted to show me. She was a proud supporter for KU. She was a very kind woman.
