I have so many fond memories of Dr. Dick and his classes when I was a graduate student at KU. The obituary states so eloquently how I felt about him during my four years of working together - he demanded the best of us because he gave us his all,and because he respected us as learners and as individuals. My husband and I are now academics, and we try to treat our students in the same manner as he treated us. We were honored guests at his house where we were served nothing but the best of home made food and unlimited hospitality. I am embarrassed to remember how long we stayed and how much we consumed! That was much appreciated and remains as one of my fondest memories of graduate school. That is the way I will remember Dr. and Mrs. Dick.

I have greatly treasured my relationship with Ernst as a colleague and a friend during the several years we both taught at the German Summer Institute of the University of California in Santa Barbara; and we have kept in touch through correspondence and phone calls across the Atlantic Ocean since then. Having always hoped to meet Ernst again one day, I now know that this will no longer be possible in this World, yet both my wife Nasy and I will always treasure our memories of the happy times we both enjoyed together with Ernst and his wife Renate in California. We thus wish to express our sincere condolence to his family and to join them in their sorrow about such an irreplaceable loss.

Ernst profoundly enriched my work as a librarian at KU. He was passionate about the Library collecting the best of German scholarship in language and literature and regularly sent me multiple selections from the major German academic publishers' catalogs. His recommendations, no matter how expensive the book was, always proved to be high-quality investments. I am fortunate and grateful to have known and worked with Ernst for some fifteen years, and I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family.
