I have fond memories of Ernie as a graduate student at KU in 1977. He really was an all time good guy and a wonderful chair of the department. Loved his sense of humor. He had a long and amazing life.

Ernie was one of those all-time good guys. I learned that right away as a grad student while he was the Department Chair and as I got to know him from a different perspective through the Geology Associates. He always greeted you with a huge smile and a warm handshake and always remembered your name and spouses name. He had a knack for that. I loved just sitting and talking to him about geology, local politics or just about anything. He always had time for you. My condolences to Ernie's family.

We will miss Ernie's wry sense of humor and his love for Lawrence. I always enjoyed conversations with Ernie, even when we agreed to disagree. It was always out of respect for each other's position. He will be missed and we share your loss.

Ann and I are saddened to learn of Ernie's passing. I have known him for over 1/2 of a century, beginning at a professional meeting about 1970. He was Geology Department chair when I was hired in 1975. He took over a program that was struggling and steadied its course. Several key hires were made under his leadership. He was instrumental in building up the Geology Associates Program of the KU Endowment Association, which led to significant resources for the program and, much later, to construction of Ritchie and Slawson halls. He was helpful in my career and provided an example when I succeeded him as department chair. Ernie had a prominent international presence through his work with the geochemical society. I could share stories of his fractured syntax, but will save them for another time. We send our condolences to Kim and Sheri and to the rest of his family.
