Elaine E. Smith

Baldwin City--Elaine E. Smith, 89, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Olathe Medical Center. She was born on March 4, 1923 on a farm near Ottawa the daughter of Wesley and Pauline Davis Catuska.

Elaine had lived in Lyndon until 1979 when she moved to Paola. She had lived in Baldwin City for the last 13 years.

She graduated from Appanoose High School in 1942 and attended Emporia Normal School to receive her teaching certificate. She and her husband ran a Hardware store in Quenemo and she operated a Ceramic Shop in Quenemo, Lyndon and Paola for several years. She was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Order of the Eastern Star, I.O.O.F, Rebeka Lodge, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxillary of Post 0156 in Paola.

Elaine was married to Paul Smith on September 24, 1943 in Iola. Paul preceded her in death in October of 1998; also by her three brothers, Jimmie Catuska, Buzz Catuska and Donald Catuska; and two sisters, Phyliss Wallace and Betty Isaacson.

Elaine is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Sherrill (Curtis) of Hutchinson and Bonnie Curtiss (Richard) of Lawrence; her two sons, Dennis Smith (Debbie) of Lyndon and Dreu Smith (Leslie) of Paola; one sister, June Smith of Gardner; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Funeral services for Elaine were held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, January 16, at the Feltner Funeral Home in Lyndon. The family received friends one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Lyndon Cemetery. Memorial contributions my be made to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and sent in care of Feltner Funeral Home, 818 Topeka Ave., Lyndon, KS. 66451.
