Eddie Nellis Obituary
Eddie Dan Nellis, age 83, of Lawrence, died Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Eddie was born February13, 1931 in Dexter, KS the son of W. T. "Ted" Nellis and Sylvia Glass Nellis. He worked for over 15 years as a foreman for Hamm Construction and then Herrman Excavating Inc. for over 15 years, retiring in 1997. He built White Oak Ranch in 1982 in Lawrence where he bred, trained and showed quarter horses. He was a member of the Teamsters Union #101 IUOE of Kansas City and the Fraternal Order of Eagle's of Lawrence.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Nellis and Melvin Nellis. He is survived by a companion, Maureen A'Hearn of Lawrence; three daughters, Aleta Spreer of Grantville, Vicki (Dennis) Sandifer of Shreveport, LA and Marsha (David) Melchiori of Coffeyville; a sister, Doris F. Davidson of Topeka; 6 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Rumsey Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence. He will lie in state Tuesday from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. with visitation from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. also at the Rumsey Yost Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Stull Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home 1035 N. Kansas Ave. Topeka 66608. Online condolences may be made at davidsonfuneral.com. Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka is in charge of arrangements.

As his sister, I always felt a surge of pride around him. He was my BABY brother even though he was the older. His ability to adapt to whatever adventure he was beginning, was a thrill to watch. I scolded him for not telling me more often when he was showing horses, it was so much fun to watch. I don't know now who will call and remind me the ball game has started. Ed and I had some great adventures at his horse farms. Ed, you will have to clean the stalls and feed Our Sonny Dee and Impressive Murf until Don and Gina Hall and Dave Norman get there to help you. If there is life after death, I've heard many people say they would like to come back as a horse and live in Ed's barn. We'll meet at the big barn. Dave Norman

Eddie was a wonderful patron at the Fiddle Leaf. He lit up my days when he came in for breakfast. He was such a sweet guy. It was a pleasure knowing him. He lead such a full life. We even had a family reunion with 2 of his grandsons here. He will be greatly missed.

I'll always remember Fast Eddie, Sonny and of course Murf. Three great guys.
Ed was always fun to be around and always had a deal cookin'. I hadn't seen him in a while but thought of him often. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

I worked with Eddie when he was at Herrmans Exc.. He was always a joy to work with and had a great sense of humor.
