I knew Earl as a grad student in KU's CS program, and then as staff in KU's Academic Computing Services. I enjoyed my work with him as he was always very affable, and he enjoyed a good laugh. I apologize for the following arcane recollections, but they are good memories for me. Our work to correct a miss-wired RACK0/TACK0 daisy-chained interrupt line on a CS dept. mini computer fixed a problem I had been fighting for some time. He also led the development of custom hardware for that same system (I did the software) that supported some of the earliest terminal time sharing access to KU's academic mainframe computer. It may not seem like much now, but back then it was state of the art. It was gratifying to collaborate with him in making this system work for the benefit of students, faculty, and staff. Thanks for everything Earl, you were tops.
