Earl Faison Obituary

Earl Faison, a former San Diego Chargers defensive end, died June 12, 2016, according to the team. He was 77.

Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos released a statement: “On behalf of the Spanos family and the entire Chargers organization, we’d like to express our deepest sympathies to the Faison family. I had the privilege of getting to know Earl through the years. He was a consummate gentleman with a booming voice and laugh. His passion for the Chargers and the game of football was unwavering. As a member of the original Fearsome Foursome, Earl was an integral part of the Chargers’ dominance in the team’s early years, helping lead the team to two American Football League championship games and winning the AFL title in 1963. His post-football career as an educator is just as accomplished. He will be missed.”

Faison was the first overall pick in the 1961 AFL draft. He won the AFL rookie of the year award that year and won the Chargers MVP award as well. He was elected to the AFL All-Star game five times.

He was nicknamed “Tree” for his height as he stood 6 foot 5, and for his ability to knock down passes. He led the Chargers to the AFL championship in 1963. He was part of the Chargers' “fearsome foursome” defensive line that also included Ernie Ladd.

After his career was over, Faison became an actor and appeared on the “Beverly Hillbillies.” He later became a high school football coach and principal.

This 51 year old husband and dad kept putting off writing to Mr Faison, for years, so as not to bother him. I grew up watching and rewatching him on one of my favorite episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man and Kolchak; The Night Stalker. As someone with depression, prayer and good, old fashioned entertainment (which Mt Faison provided to so many of us who never got to meet him) have meant a great deal to me, my whole life. And so I pray for Mr Faison, and thank him for the entertainment he provided me, over and over again for 40 years. And, I pray for his family. Someday, God will reunite you with Earl Faison, and it will be as if no time had passed. God Bless.

Earl was a neighbor when I lived in San Diego. He was a quiet humble man who cared for others. When my wife underwent breast cancer surgery, Earl came to the hospital and spent time with me. Rest in peace number 86 - you were one class act.,

To the Faison family --

My deepest and sincere condolences - may you find peace and comfort!

Earl Faison was a very thoughtful person. Both my kids had the pleasure of knowing him while they attended UC High School in LaJolla where he was the Vice Principal. He was a kind, unselfish individual and always looked out for the students at UC. My son suffered an injury while running in a track meet one afternoon after school. Mr. Faison was there and made sure we got him to the hospital. He was so considerate in that he came all the way to the Naval Hospital to see how my son was doing before and after his surgery. He was happy to see my son join the USMC after high school and wished him well.

Very humble man - he will be truly missed by all.

I am visiting my son in Maryland and if there is a memorial service in his home of Virginia, we would like to be there to honor his life and legacy. Rest in peace Earl Faison!

There was a youthful pride in learning about the athletic feats of Earl Faison, upon entering the very high school (Huntington) that he had graduated from, a little more than a decade earlier.

And then, years later, to be at an art gallery in Maryland, where his former San Diego Charger teammate, and now esteemed artist, Ernie Barnes whose having a show . . . "Mr. Barnes, I'm from Earl Faison's hometown." And he pleasantly voiced: "You're from Newport . . . "

I extend heartfelt condolences to the Faison family.

To the Family & Friends of Earl Faison:

Although Earl Faison was best known for the excitement, thrills, and awe he gave to football fans through his outstanding play on the gridiron – his friends and teammates called him “Tree" for his stalwart defense – he was also a gracious and thoughtful gentleman.

In the 1960s when I was a student at MIT and the San Diego Chargers came to New England to play the "Boston Patriots," for several years Earl would contact me in advance. Prior to game day, we would tour Boston and Cambridge before and after dinner. On game day, he would introduce me to several of his teammates and provide space for me on the Chargers' bus as it transported the team from their hotel and drove through the gates into Fenway Park, where the games were played during those years. Thus, through Earl's kindness and friendship, as a college student I was able to observe gratis and up close the fledgling AFL.

After Earl's retirement – initially in San Diego and then to Arizona – I lost touch with him. With the assistance of Cynthia Davis and Barbara Marshall Faison, my communication with him was reestablished. Although he and I chatted on the telephone, permitting me to express my appreciation to him for his generosity to me during his football career, we never got together again. Nonetheless, I further kept in touch by sending him postcards during my travels around the world.

We are all once again reminded of the brevity of our Earthbound existence.

You and Earl are in my thoughts.
