He sang "Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire.", in the 1980's at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium with the Lake Avenue Church Sanctuary Choir and orchestra. This was one of the greatest things to happen to me since I sang in that choir.

Doug first came to my attention when - as a teenager - he was a trombonist in an Inglewood, California church orchestra. I was the choir director. Doug had a nice tone on his horn. Many years passed.
We next crossed paths when he was the innovative choir director and producer of music at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in Menlo Park, California.
Then, and a few years later, together we performed my arrangements and one composition for vocal and piano. Fortunately for the audiences, Doug did all of the singing.
In addition to his professional polish as a music choir and ensemble director, he was a joyful, superbly talented, wonderful vocalist with remarkable ears for pitch and feeling, and most remarkable, along with all those superb attributes, there was one more: Doug was a fearless "lets do this" vocal performer who could and would - in my personal experience as a composer and accompanist - flawlessly sing new arrangements and compositions on short notice, making them better than their lyricist and composer ever dreamed they could sound.
In my experience, Doug was also an extremely kind man.
To his wife, family and others close to Doug all the years since I had the pleasure of working with him are no doubt sad at losing him, I can only imagine the extent of your sadness.
I do hope you have good, fond memories that far exceed those I've treasured of Doug starting more years ago than can be counted on the years of six sets of both of my hands. And yes, while in age, I was always ahead of Doug, my lead over him was only in age - not on anything musical.
