Donald Shade Obituary

Memorial services for Donald Douglas "Doug" Shade, 80, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at West Campus of United Methodist Church at 867 Hwy 40.

Donald Douglas Shade passed away at Baldwin Health Care and Rehab Center on August 7, 2016.

He was born March 29,1936 to Donald and Audrey (Sparks) Shade in Ottawa, Kansas. He loved sport and played basketball, football and baseball for Ottawa High School. He married Ruby Sterlin of Scott City, Kansas, on August 24, 1958, and graduated from KU School of Business in1960. He was a member of Alpha Tou Omega and lifetime member of KU Alumni Association. They moved to Kansas City where Doug worked for City National Bank (now UMB) in the Trust Department, and later at General Motors in Leeds. In 1974 the couple moved to Lawrence where Doug worked for Burnett Instruments and the same time owned and operated both Baskin Robbins ice cream stores in Lawrence and Olathe and Bum Steer Barbeque in Lawrence.

Doug, Ruby and their three children lived near the Alvamar Country Club, and it was there he played the game he loved for over 40 years. Doug was honored to serve as Alavamar's Country Club Kansas golf Association (KGA) Cup Tour captain in the 1990's, leading the team to a win in 1995 and runners-up the following year. He was also a member of the KGA board and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

Doug retired in 2002. He played numerous rounds of golf at the Alvamar Country Club with the Noon Group. Doug attended West Campus of United Methodist Church these last few years.

He is survived by wife Ruby, children Mark (Annelie), Sitges, Spain, Susan Klopfenstein (Mark), Colorado Springs, CO, Steve (Christina), Parkville, MO, and seven grandchildren: Kai and Amber Shade, Kate and Caleb Klopfenstein, Adele, Audrey and Ian Shade. Also surviving Doug are his younger siblings Rodney Shade (Bonnie), nephews Alan, David (Mary), and Sandi Simmons, nephews Chad and Kirk Simmons.

Doug was a lifelong Jayhawk who was passionate about golf and KU basketball all his life. He was thrilled to see the Royals win the pennant last year. He was a kind and generous man who loved his family and was proud to see his children all graduate from KU. Doug was a well loved Papa who always had 31 flavors of ice cream for the grand kids.

The family suggests memorial contributions made to the First United Methodist Church or Douglas County Hospice, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street Lawrence, KS, 66044.
