An Inspired and Inspirational Man; During our Connecticut College Lacrosse Days, four decades ago, (the first three men's teams in the school's history) fellow co-captain and my line-mate for all three years, Beaver Morrin, in the heat of battle, would call out a code word for the team to "toughen up" and "eat dirt" and that code name was Rumsfeld. He meant something to us: here is a real American. Thank God. Condolences to classmate Valerie. An inspirational man. 9/11/21

Mr. Rumsfeld is one of my greatest heroes. The Rumsfeld Way was one of my favorite books growing up. His compass towards good, ridiculous work ethic, discipline, and wit. Nothing is perfect and he navigated those waters perfectly and with confidence. A legend, and I love that I had the opportunity to watch and learn from his life. I miss him and my condolences to his family and friends. What a great man.

Don and I were Flight Instructors in the same unit at Pensacola, FL Naval Aviation Basic Training Command in 1956
At that time we were training many foreign flight students so our skills and patience were put to the test.
"Rummy" would come over to our bachelor pad on the Bay for some water skiing, with Joyce and new baby, and we
would relieve the duties of the day with a beer or two. Good memories to hold. Semper Fi

Dear Joyce and family,

Ann and I send our prayers to each of you, saddened by the loss of this great American patriot. We were proud to have had the privilege to work with DR and his team at Searle/NutraSweet, and alongside DR, Bernie Windon and political advisors as Don considered a run for the White House in '88. What a remarkable, towering figure in the American political landscape who left an enduring imprint for his intellect, humor, kindness and leadership.

I served at the Pentagon, as a US Navy Intelligence Officer, during much of SECDEF Rumsfeld's tenure. I understand those who hold both admiration for his decades-long service to the US Government and also those who hold criticisms.

Regardless, he was a tremendous public servant and Patriot, and I offer my sincere condolences and prayers to the family on his passing.

God Bless.

To The Rumsfeld Family-You are blessed more than you know! Did he ever meet anyone he wasn't kind to? A chance encounter in Crystal City, Virginia I asked him to come meet my Colonel and he asked me where is the elevator? Both he and the Secret Service followed me. All these years later I sill don't believe it happened! An ordinary man with extra ordinary ways. I can hear the angels saying as he approaches heaven, "All hands on deck"! My heart says, Thank you, Sir!

To The Rumsfeld Family,

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Rumsfeld's death. I had never met him but I think I would have liked him. I saw video of 9/11 and caught a glimpse of him helping outside the Pentagon. To my knowledge, that never made the news but it endeared him to me because he helped without ceremony. He just did what he had to do. I have been thinking of you and meaning to offer condolences. I lost my mother in 2007 and it was so painful that I decided to be there for others who go through a loss. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that someone out here cares and will be praying for you.

He was a great leader and invited me to participate in the Republician revolution during the early 1980's. His insights and the progress we created together helped bring many citizens out of poverty. We brought many people out of poverty from the minority communities and inner cities. Always fair and equitable in his wise advice and actions. Thank you for the richness you have bestowed upon my life and hundreds of my fellow Americans.

In the era when members of the House of Representatives walked door-to-door campaigning for office, my Congressional Representative, Don Rumsfeld, rang my doorbell in Evanston and was invited into my apartment for a brief chat. We talked for some time because he was surprised that a soon-to-be Doctoral student at Northwestern shared so many of his own carefully thought out conservative principles. The era was also one when graduate students were permitted by the nomenclatura to hold non-Marxist beliefs. Rumsfeld's brilliance convined me that merely voting for him was too little a committment. He trotted out to the car to pick up a big stack of posters and other campaign literature. That material spread quickly around Evanston and Northwestern. I visited his campaign office twice more for materials. Which helped me convince others as to the importance of sending this intelligent, honorable young man back to Washington. We certainly need such patriot-representatives supporting us, today. In the spirit of Don Rumsfeld, I pray they step forward in 2022 and beyond. RIP to a decent, pnrincpled American.

My sincere condolences to the Rumsfeld family as you endure the passing of your beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His service to the United States as a Naval Officer, Member of Congress, a Presidential staff member and as The Secretary of Defense helped guide this country during periods of great danger and international turmoil. As a member of the United States military during his leadership as Secretary of Defense, I always felt we were being led by the absolute best. Sadly, we have lost a great Patriot, the likes of which we will not see again.

I drove Secretary Rumsfeld around Washington, DC during the Dole/Kemp 1996 Presidential campaign. He fired me every other night for being a bad driver and getting us lost in DC. Now mind you those were the days before mapquest and google maps ... His bark was worse than his bite ... He was tough but also a real softie! I once got lost driving him back to the Four Seasons right around the Kennedy Center and we went about 20 minutes out of the way but luckily his beloved son was in the car and "Rummy" couldn't yell at me. He always had a nice thought or story to tell after a long day at the office or on the campaign trail. May you rest in peace Mr. Secretary.

My father Joe Giallombardo was the gymnastics (1940-1975) & wrestling (late 1940’s) coach at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois and was an early mentor to Donald.. Dad always called him Donny.. In addition to helping coach Donald on the wrestling team, Dad got the Rumsfelds a trampoline and gave their children trampoline lessons..
My daughter met Donald while she worked at the Heritage Foundation. On an evening he was to speak at a Heritage Foundation event, she mentioned to him that she was Joe G’s granddaughter. Donald immediately stopped his activities and spent 10-15 minutes telling her stories about my dad /her grandfather, and how much he admired & respected him.. I have 2 letters sent to our family from Donald; one when my dad retired from New Trier in 1975 and one when my father died in 2011.. We are grateful for his kindness to the Giallombardo family and for his service to our country. Our sympathies and prayers to the Rumsfeld family.
