Davey Nelson Obituary

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Davey Nelson, a Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster and former All-Star infielder who also coached in the majors, has died. He was 73.

The Brewers say Nelson died Monday after a long illness.

Nelson joined the Brewers as a roving minor league instructor in 2001 before joining the big league team as first base coach two years later.

He became an analyst with Fox Sports Wisconsin in 2006 and took a front-office role with the Brewers organization.

He played in the majors from 1968-77 as an infielder with the Indians, Senators, Rangers and Royals. Nelson made the 1973 AL All-Star team after batting .286 with 43 stolen bases with Texas.

Opening day here in Milwaukee today 3/28/19 and I miss hearing Davey Nelson.
Feeling sad.

When I was a young girl back in Cleveland I had a Davey Nelson Fan Club. It was just me and some of my schoolmates but we got to meet him and it was the best day of my young life. I continued to follow him while he was a coach here in New York and have been a life time fan. Thank you, Davey, for enriching so many lives along your journey. Well done!

Davey was the most dedicated, devoted and caring friend I ever had.For nearly 20 years, he drove or flew 2,600 miles round trip just to buy his cars from me. We enjoyed many dinners and lunches together with my friends and family. He treated us to many of the Brewers games and always's made you feel like part of the team and part of his family. The world lost a great man. I will never forget you Dave, God bless you....Buzz Kerchelich

What I will always remember is that whenever I spoke with David, he made me feel like the most important person in his life. He had that gift - along with so many others. His gentle spirit and compassionate soul will be so missed here on earth. Rest in peace my friend.

I am so sad. Dave Nelson was as great a person as he was an athlete. When I got to run the 1st leg of a varsity 4x100 relay as a high school soph, it was an honor of a lifetime to run with Dave who was already a legend in his own time. When I received my first varsity letter, Dave lent me his letterman sweater to wear to a school dance while waiting for mine to be finished - what a class act! God rest his soul.

Very sorry to hear about Dave's passing. He was a great guy. In high school when I couldn't afford a letterman's sweater, he gave me his which I still have. It still reminds me of him, his kindness and his accomplishments.

I first met Dave when my grammar school played in the 1961 Serra HS basketball tournament. He came into our locker room with that great smile passing out chocolate bars. He was only a sophomore but already a varsity 4-sport legend. He always had a smile and good word for everyone. One of 8 African-American students at Serra, Dave taught a lot of us about race relations just by being a gentleman, campus leader and our great athlete. He was my sports idol, our Jackie Robinson. I personally witnessed Dave between innings of a varsity baseball game hustle to the other end of the campus to win the broad jump in one try while still in his baseball uniform before returning to his SS position for the next inning. A 3-year starter in basketball he could leap out of the gym at 5'9" routinely dunking with 2 hands and blocking shots from much bigger opponents. So respected, he was elected student body vice-president in our 98% caucasian school. He made everyone play a better. Dave touched so many lives on and off the field. He was loved by literally 1,000's of fans, friends and family. RIP, my old friend.

Dave Nelson was the first autograph I ever got on my Sears and Roebuck glove on the field with the rest of our Little League team at Mile High (formerly Bears Stadium) for the Denver Bears in 1970. I still remember.

April 24, 2018

Several years ago I came across a Cleveland Indians program at a garage sale. When paging through it, I found an article featuring All-Star Davey Nelson. My son and I had a Brewers season ticket pakage and we saw Davey and Craig Coshun at their usual station at the far end of the first base line. I gave my program to Davey for his autograph, this was going to make my day. To my surprise it made Davey's day.
He went through the program cover to cover several time, pointing out things to Craig, laughing and shaking his head. It took about 15 minutes to finally get Davey's autograph. I'll never forget how it made Davey's day. God Bless!

As a 12/13 yr old, i met Davey when he played for the AAA Portland Beavers (farm team of the Indians), as i was a friend of Manager Johnny Lipton's son. When he saw me, outside the stadium one evening with a friend, he remembered me by name, briefly chatted and then moved on. As someone else said, "he took every opportunity to turn a casual conversation into a friendship". He had a great smile and was a class act. He made a difference. David Mc/Pasadena

I was surprised and deeply saddened to learn of Davey's passing yesterday. Having worked at the ballpark for many years, I often saw and spoke with Davey, usually around the FSN booth. He always took time with me to talk about baseball as well as other mundane things.
I never heard him complain, even though I knew he was not 'feeling 100%". He would just brush it off, saying, "Oh well, I've been having a little trouble with...." He never let on that he was battling cancer.
Davey was a good man; genuine, humble, soft-spoken, kind, and thoughtful. A man of great character.
I'm hoping the Brewers will find an appropriate way to honor him. He will be dearly missed by the whole 'Crew'.
My condolences go out to his family and friends. My prayer is that Davey Nelson is 'safe, at home' in the arms of Jesus Christ!
Rest-in-peace, my friend...until that day.

I and my brother met Mr. Nelson briefly at Fenway park in 1969. It was before the game and the Teams were practicing.

Our Father had died earlier that year.
I was 16 and my brother 10 and we had gone to the game. We had a chance to chat with Mr. Nelson along the field in the dugout area. When he heard that our Father had died, Mr. Nelson was very kind and caring and he gave my brother a baseball.

I have and will always remember his kindness and his taking a few minutes to chat with two kids. It made our day. God Bless him and his family.

I first met Davey 30 years ago in Chicago. Our enthusiasm for the national pastime led to a wonderful friendship that I will treasure the rest of my life. He treated me like a best friend. Davey had a lot of best friends. Davey touched home plate last night, but he brought plenty of joy to people as he circled the bases. It is fitting that Davey left us after a Brewer win leading into an off day. That gives him time to reserve a section of seats at Royals Stadium for his many old friends and the new friends he made today. RIP Davey! You will be missed but never forgotten.
