I first met Darrell when I student taught at LHS. He struck me as a quiet leader who worked hard to support his profession. Our paths crossed many times over the course of my career. I feel fortunate to have know Darrell. My sincere sympathy.

I was fortunate to able to spend part of my Thursday morning with Darrell Ward for several years at the Lawrence Visitor Center where he volunteered. His involvement with the visitor center went back to the beginning and he was always a sterling example of what a good citizen and ambassador he was for his community. He was always upbeat and smart and this was reflected in his work with out-of-town visitors. I feel blessed to have gotten to know him and to call him my friend. My heart goes out to Jo and his family. He will be deeply missed by many.

Dear Jo, Dan, & family,

My heart goes out to you for your loss. Our community has lost a beautiful person.

I was lucky to have worked with this kind, smart, and funny man for two decades. Darrell was more than an outstanding bailiff, he was a consummate officer of the court. Always appropriately professional, Darrell had a calming presence for jurors, lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants. As the overseer of jurors, he knew full well the importance of appearing fair and impartial and his stoicism never faltered, no matter how egregious or sad the case being tried. He made all of those he worked with better at their jobs, and our court system was better because of him.

But, when the two of us were alone waiting on a verdict, Darrell would usually come up with some ironic one-liner which summarized the case better than any lawyer could. As his friends and family know, Darrell's dry humor was second to none.

Occasionally, well more than occasionally, I would open the morning paper to read a letter to the editor that Darrell had written which convincingly made a point about the value of public school teachers and public education, his pride and passion. Again, our community has lost a beautiful person who made Lawrence a better place to live.

Mr. Ward was my English teacher at Lawrence High School. He was a wonderful teacher. He was a very kind and thoughtful person. It was obvious he was a Christian. What a great man. I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew Darrell when he was a bailiff at the courthouse. Such a gentle man, so pleasant and always so calm. Our favorite bailiff.
