Dan Shanower Obituary

I just wanted to check in as 9/11 is just about upon us once more. I think of you often Shipmate and I was honored to serve with you in the Intelligence Center of the USS Midway (CV-41) for 2 years. You could always make me
laugh ! Gone, but not forgotten my Brother. SEMPER FORTIS.

Cdr Dan Shanower, I never met you, but I knew your parents from when I played softball for North Central College on the Shanower Family Field. I will be running in your memory at tomorrow's 3rd Infantry Division 9/11 Memorial Run. Your sacrifice and legacy will always be remembered and will live on.

We remember you, Dan. Remembering all of the laughter at Carroll College and the parties at your folks house in Naperville when they were gone for the weekend (Sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Shanower). I knew Dan when we both served in Japan while in the Navy in 1986. He was roomates on board MIDWAY with my best friend, Doug Hora, who was lost at sea during an aviation incident in the Indian Ocean. I remember and honor Dan's memory today and thank him for his service.

Dan, I remember you and your family every year at this time. We shared so much laughter at Carroll College and you were certainly the funniest formal date I ever had! I keep your parents in my heart and remember you fondly.

I used to live in Naperville, went to school with Vicki, and Doc inspired my love of theatre. I never got far, but I passed it on to my niece who is an NYU grad and a working actress. You never know what or who you might inspire. On this tenth anniversary of your son's death, I chanced upon the news articles about him and about you. I remember him as a somewhat pesky little brother, but what a man he grew to be! I know the sorrow will never go away and that 10 years don't diminish your loss. Know that people all over he country stand with you at this time. I will add his name to the St. Andrews Episcopal Church rememberance next Sunday in Tacoma, Washington. Love and rememberance,

You were where you were meant to be Dan. Thank you for your service and for your sacrifice. My kids know you well. (Someday I'll tell them some of the more "colorful" stories.) I do get a kick out of googleing Dan and reading the "laying down in the outfield story" in little league. We were on the Cardinals together and thanks to a mix up we had green and gold jerseys, and the A's had red and white. Only in Naperville. You were a great friend and a role model for civility, courage, committment and love of country. God Bless you and your family. I'll visit Arlington again soon.

I Recently went to The 9/11 Tribute Center and Purchased a Bracelet with Dan's Name on It, i have been Reading About Dan and he seems to have been an Amazing Man. Thank You for Protecting us and Giving up your life for Our Freedom, I will Forever Wear this Bracelet in His Honor..

THE LOSS OF DAN REALLY BROUGHT THE ATTACK TO ME EVEN MORE ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. I WENT TO HS WITH DAN, HUNG AROUND WITH HIM FOR YEARS, HAD ALOT OF LAUGHS. I STILL THINK OF HIM ALOT, OBVIOUSLY 7 YEARS LATER, WRITING THIS. I MOURN HIS LOSS, AND AM GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS BOTH IN HIS MILITARY CAREER, AND JUST HAVING KNOWN HIM.

The years have passed and every year on 9/11 others remember the national tragedy but I only remember you, Dan. Thank you for the time you spent with us.

You were a fine officer and I consider it an honor to have known you, first at Yokota AB, Japan and then later at the Pentagon when you always had time to stop and talk when our paths would occasionally cross.

I want to let you all know what a great officer CDR Shanower was. His leadership continues to effect all those he came in contact with. He had a way of always lightening the air in our office. He is missed everyday. Proud to be a war-dog!

I read Dan's Naperville Central High School 'Senior Comment' after I learned he was killed (I graduated the same year he did. I didn't know him but he was in some of the same classes I was.) The last words in his Senior Comment are: 'Have fun in life'. He wrote that in 1979. I thought the people reading this might see the wisdom in his simple comment, made so long ago. God bless you all ;)

Dan, I was at your grave today, in Arlington National Cemetery. This is the third time, including the day you were buried. I know many people were there in spirit with me.



You sure cut a swath through life!

As we approach the second anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I welcome the construction in Dan's hometown of a monument to Dan and the others who perished that day. As a shipmate and friend of Dan's, I will never forget him.

Your wisdom and leadership is greatly missed....

My prayers go to you and yours on the anniversary of this tragedy. I want you to know that Dan is watching over you with God in heaven and waiting for you to reunite with him. I had the privledge of meeting Dan through my sister, Santina Poor. He was a a great friend to her and her husband and I know they miss him. The world lost a wonderful human being on 9-11. God Bless You.

"Freedom isn't free, you got to pay the price, you got to sacrifice for your liberty" These are words to a song written in the seventies, and echoed in your essay Dan, "Freedom Isn't Free". You lived your life to the fullest in every repect. You paid the price, you made the sacrifice, for my liberty. I thank you. You and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Oh how I regret not meeting up with you in DC in June.

I knew Dan at ONI, prior to leaving for the Pentagon. He was passionate in all things.

When my close relative sent an e-mail saying that her favorite cousin was missing, my heart went out to her. Dan had just moved to a new office in the renovated part of the Pentagon-- the part destroyed by the plane. I'll never forget how much she misses him.

To the Shanower family. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. One can never forget the energy and wholeheartness that your son brought to the world. A truly honorable man and a truly senseless loss for anyone who knew him. It was an honor to have known him on a personal level. He will not be forgotten.

I remember the day that CNN ticker taped Dan's name across the screen as one of those believed dead. At the time, I thought it had to be another Dan Shanower, it couldn't be the happy, slightly loonie kid I went to Washington Jr. High with. It just HAD to be another with the same name. Unfortunately, I found out from my sister at the same time that I found out my cousin, who also was in the section that was hit, made it out of the Pentagon alive, it was indeed, the same Dan. My contact with Dan in High School was limited, as I went to North and he to Central, but what I do remember fills me wth sorrow that he should be taken, and rage at the manner in which he was taken. My heart goes out to his family.

My deepest symathies to the Shanower family. My older brother, Ken, graduated with, and was good friends with Dan. I know he is missed.

I remember what a friendly, funny guy he was... I know he is in many people's hearts and memories.

I will keep Dan and his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers.

I met Dan in HK. We talked a lot about politics, our job, HK, the U.S. etc. We even talked about writing a book, about some of the ideas that I had shared with him. We exchanged emails after he left HK. I promised to visit him in the U.S. but never had the opportunity.



I don't know him very well but I could tell he is a person with a beautiful heart. God bless his soul.
