Dale Herndon

Dale Herndon, formerly of Eudora, died Oct. 8, 2014 in Springfield, MO. He was 95.

He was born November 2, 1918 to Otis and Ella (Murphy) Herndon in Almartha, Mo. the 6th of 8 children. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

On June 6, 1947, he married Phyllis Lawrence, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage together. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters: Joy Herndon of Springfield, Mo., and Sherri Herndon of Clementon, NJ; two sisters-in-law: Eve Rhea of Wichita, Kan., and Pat Gardner of Mountain Home, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dale served in the Army Air Force in World War II as an airplane mechanic. As a young man, he lived and worked in Denver, Colo., as well as in Oklahoma and Kansas. His jobs included driving a milk truck and operating a service station. He worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in Kansas during the early 1950s.

In 1958, Dale and Phyllis moved to Eudora, where they lived for the next 30 years. He worked in construction for a time, but then worked 19 years for the Coleman Implement Company in Bonner Springs before retiring. After retirement, Dale and Phyllis moved to Springfield, MO, in 1988.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and a faithful member of the Sunset Church of Christ in Springfield. While living in Kansas, he was a Bible class teacher and deacon at the Vinland Church of Christ.

He was an avid woodworker and gardener, and had a great love of travel. He traveled from coast to coast in the U.S. and was always interested in new places.

Funeral services were held October 11 at Greenlawn Funeral Home South in Springfield, MO, with burial in Souder Cemetery in Ozark County.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fair Haven Children's Home, Strafford, MO.
