Chuck Loeb Obituary

Chuck Loeb, a highly regarded jazz guitarist who worked with Stan Getz and Steps Ahead, has died of cancer, according to Jazz Times magazine. He was 61.

His family reported that Loeb died Monday, July 31, 2017.

Bassist Will Lee, who was a member of the house band for “Late Night With David Letterman” and was an associate of Chuck Loeb, paid tribute to the guitarist in an email to Jazz Times:

“The music scene has suffered a devastating blow. Master guitarist and composer Chuck Loeb was so musical, he was one of those big-eared geniuses that heard the music in everyone and everything around him. Playing with Chuck on so many occasions, I can tell you that he had a way of utilizing my talents to get just what he needed out of me. May Chuck’s incredible spirit be remembered in his music for all time.”

Toto guitarist Steve Lukather paid tribute to Loeb on Twitter: “I was honored to know him and the most kind -sweet man ever. Incredible composer and Guitarist ! Damn.... RIP....”

Loeb was born Dec. 7, 1955, in Nyack, New York. He took up the guitar, and by the age of 13, he was playing in local bands. After high school, he attended Berklee College of Music for two years and then went to New York City to pursue a music career.

In New York, Loeb played with Chico Hamilton and Freddie Hubbard. In 1979, jazz legend Stan Getz asked Loeb to be a member of his band. He played with Getz for five years and then formed the band Metro, which released several albums in the 1990s.

For a time, he was a member of the jazz fusion group Steps Ahead, which featured saxophonist Michael Brecker. In 2010, Loeb took the place of Larry Carlton in the smooth-jazz supergroup Fourplay. He toured and recorded with the band for many years.

Loeb released multiple solo albums and toured with his own band. He was also a composer of music for film and television. He composed the theme music for “CNN Headline News,” “Nightline,” the New York Yankees, and the New York Knicks.

According to a 2005 article in Jazz Times, Loeb was a big fan of Bob Dylan and played with his idol in a guest appearance at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. He told the Jazz Times, “The first song I ever learned on guitar was ‘Like a Rolling Stone.’ Dylan turned to me after one solo and said, ‘Yeah, Chuck,’ and I thought, ‘OK, I can die now!’”

Loeb is survived by his wife, singer Carmen Cuesta Loeb, and daughters Lizzy and Christina.

As I reflect on the music that I have listened to throughout my many years, Chuck Loeb always jumps to the front of the list. Chuck's music was always crisp, clean and an engineering / musical masterpiece.
It was, and still is easy to hear that Chuck loved to play the guitar and mastered his instrument. It is a true pleasure to listen to his music and he will live on forever. Groove on in heaven Chuck!!!

At a crucial crossroad in my life, into my soundscape came your CD The Music Inside, and Cruzin' South. It lifted me, and literally as well as figuratively carried me south to a new exciting restart to my world and career.
It is one of a very few, significant 'traveling songs' that have marked transitional moments in my life, and I can not help but smile, and now cry, when I hear it again. Cruzin' is the core of a world of glad memories, sights, scents, joys and experiences. All unforgettable. Easy to recall, thanks to you.
I know you did not create it only for me.
But I hold it close to my heart as though you had.
Play on!

I met Chuck Loeb when he came to play at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in South Africa. He was brought by the promoter for an interview on my radio show. He was humble, engaging, unassuming and generally very kind hearted. It was his first trip here. He was blown away to learn he was my favorite guitarist. From Steps Ahead to Fourplay and all his solo recordings in between. I loved him. I loved feeling his soul through his guitar. May his soul Rest In Peace. He was appreciated. Thoroughly! I first saw Chuck Loeb with Bob James at a concert in Camden Town, London called Jongleurs. Chuck was Bobs guest. It was a small venue and I was standing only five yards from the stage. This must have been in about 1998?? maybe? The set was incredible and I've been a Chuck Loeb fan ever since. So so shocked to hear of his passing. He was an all time great of mine and i was delighted when he finally joined Fourplay.........his natural musical home I thought at the time. Bob james obviously regarded him as one of the very best and so did I.

I have no words for the immense loss I feel after just learning of Chuck's death. I've been out of circulation for over a month in self-imposed exile from the internet, hence the news came as a shock.

I have enjoyed Chuck and his incredible music from as far back as his first amazing musical adventures with his band, with Fourplay and with others. My wife and I were planning to see Fourplay on one of their upcoming concert tours. Alas, we can now only keep listening and enjoying various recordings.

So glad that he went on to greater things, and so glad that his music and legacy live on.
