Christopher Caldwell Obituary

Christopher Michael Caldwell, born November 12, 1973 in Stillwater, Oklahoma to James Franklin Caldwell and Marcia Ann Garst Caldwell, died on October 14, 2016. Chris cherished his son Jay, and exemplified parental love and support. Philosophy students knew him as Dr. Caldwell at the schools where he taught, including the University of Kansas, Southwestern College, Wichita State, and at Virginia State University, where he chaired the Department of History and Philosophy. He earned his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and his MA and PhD in philosophy from the University of Kansas. Chris was a devoted colleague, a talented musician and vocalist, and a generous and thoughtful human being. The world is a poorer place for having lost him. His death is mourned by his son Jay; his wife, Delilah; his mother Marcia; his brother Steve and countless friends, students, and loved ones.

A memorial service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2016 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Cremator, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. In lieu of flowers, please consider offering Jay memories of Chris that you might be willing to write down. There will never be a way to make up for the loss of his papa, but having a broader picture made up of words from people who knew Chris at different times and places might help in some way. Please send any written memories to P.O. Box 176, New Philadelphia, OH 44663, or via email, [email protected]. If you wish to make a monetary contribution, we ask that you contribute to Jay's college fund by mailing a check to Raymond James Financial Services, 1425 Oread West, Suite 106, Lawrence, KS 66049. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.

We were shocked to hear of Chris' death. Southwestern College allows retirees to audit one class a semester and it was my good fortune to sign up for Chris' class. It only took one lecture to see his passion and skill for teaching. We all enjoyed his quick wit and self-effacing humor. It was no surprise that the student body chose him as "favorite prof". We appreciated getting to know Delilah and Jay. We were saddened when they moved to Virginia and I still think of Chris every time I drive by what was their home here.

I am deeply saddened to learn, especially so belatedly, of Chris' death. We were colleagues at Southwestern College in Kansas, back toward the beginning of his and Delilah's teaching career. He was a joy to work with. He patiently listened to my philosophical ramblings (as did Delilah!) and willingly dreamed with me to think about how we could make a great experience for our students. Students absolutely loved him. To Jay and Delilah, my deepest condolences and prayers for courage and strength.

Chris was a dear, dear friend. I am devastated. So much devotion to truth and goodness and justice, so much loyalty to friends and family, so much beauty in athletics and music. I miss him deeply.

I couldn't say enough about Chris's sense of justice, loyalty to friends and family, humor, musical sensitivity, courage, love, joy in sports, devotion to philosophical contemplation... RIP, beautiful soul.

He was one of my favorites. He will forever live in my heart. His laugh, smile, love of baseball, love for Jennings, love of environment, love of philosophy and his genuine care for his students. I can still recall our Mill, Kant, Chomsky, and Rousseau conversations. He definitely left the world better than he found it. I have looked at his picture everyday since finding out about this tragedy. I miss him.

Chris was a quiet, fun-loving person. He was precious and dearly loved and will be greatly missed. He had an impish smile. Love, aunt Marilyn
