Christina Parr Obituary

Dr. Christina Yates Parr (retired) of Eudora, Kansas, formerly of Columbia, South Carolina, died on January 1, 2021. Christina was the daughter of Dr. Theodore M. Yates and Jean K. Yates who were both medical missionaries in China when Christina was born. Christina was born on October 20, 1926, in Anhwei (Anhui) Province, China where she continued to live until she was a teenager. Both parents and Christina's brother, James K. Yates, and sister-in-law Dottie Yates preceded her in death. Christina was married to and divorced from Petro R. Parr, deceased. Three children survive from that marriage: Katherine A. Parr of Brown Summit, NC, Jean P. Hall and husband Denny of Eudora, KS and Karl P. Parr and wife Sandy of Fuquay-Varina, NC.

Christina is also survived by six grandchildren, including triplets, Christopher, Katherine and James Hall of Eudora, Kansas, and Andrew, Charlotte and Olivia Parr of Fuquay-Varina, NC. In addition, Christina is survived by her two nephews, Ted and Greg Yates of California.

Christina received her undergraduate degree from Agnes Scott University graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and her medical degree from Temple University and completed her residency in Chicago. She served as a medical missionary in Iran from 1959 to 1961 and then was in private practice in Columbia, South Carolina from 1961 until she retired in 1997. Her practice in Columbia offered the first integrated waiting room in the city. During her 36 years in private practice, Christina delivered more than 3,000 babies into this world. She moved to Eudora, KS in 2003 to be closer to her then only grandchildren. Christina was active in the Eudora United Methodist Church for many years, volunteered at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, enjoyed gardening, reading and her Siamese cats. Christina also did mission work in Honduras, Peru, and Guatemala. She was a 20+ year survivor of breast cancer.

Memorials may be made to Eudora United Methodist Church in Eudora, KS or Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. For more information or to post a condolence go to warrenmcelwain.com.

Dr. Parr delivered my one and only child in 1994. She was a very compassionate doctor and I felt safe in her care. When I was about to deliver my son she told me the epidural had worn off and it was too late to give me another. Shortly thereafter she pulled him out with forceps. So confident, so experienced, so skilled. Thank you Dr. Parr! My baby boy is coming up on 29 years old.

Dr Parr was the best doctor I have ever had, so sad to hear she passed away last year. She was my doctor back in the early 1990´s, just a wonderful woman, she CARED about her patients. There will never be another one like her. I will always be grateful we got to know each other for a short period of time.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Christina Y. Parr she was in my thoughts so I looked her up and found her obituary. I have 2 adult children that are here because of her giving me the surgery I needed to extend my pregnancy to 9 months. A cervical cerclage is the procedure. I found her in Kansas after looking her up and wrote her a thank you letter, she responded back I was elated she knew exactly who I was. Thank you Dr. Parr for making my life better. I'll love you always.

She was my OB/GYN and delivered my only child, now 40. I thought the world of her and always wanted more time to hear her stories! She led an incredible life of giving and I appreciate her kindness to me. I was disappointed when she moved, but what a good reason!
I had thought about her not too long ago and wondered if she were still alive. She had a long, great life, it seems!!
Karl, I taught middle school French at Heathwood and I'm pretty sure that I taught you, many years ago. I also think Dr. Parr told me that you and my daughter shared the same birthday 8-10.
I know you will all miss her tremendously , but I'm sure you all have fantastic memories with her. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Though Dr. Parr was not my physician, I visited with her on several occasions with mutual friends. She was a charming, intelligent and kind person. I so enjoyed hearing the interesting and fascinating stories of the years she lived in China. I extend my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to her loved ones. May she rest in peace.

Chris was the “Big girl” that lived across the street when I was little. She later was my doctor and delivered my first child. She was a wonderful person with a big smile, a wonderful sense of humor, and always had a kind word!! She was a blessing to many of us! My thoughts and prayers are with her family!

Dr. Parr was a gifted, compassionate and very personable doctor. She delivered my first child and her practicing partner Dr. Orr my second. I always felt cared for while being her patient and although extremely happy for her retirement and move to Kanas....i hated seeing her go. May your family find comfort in knowing how well loved and admired she was by all those who knew her.

Dr. Parr was my OB/GYN in Columbia until she retired. Lovely woman, super sharp, compassionate, and often funny! What a long and rich life she led. My sincere condolences to her family.

Dr. Parr was my OB-Gyn for many years. She not only delivered both of my daughters but she also did three of my surgeries. She was brilliant and competent, and I was so grateful for her when I had a very difficult pregnancy with my first child and a difficult delivery (and hemorrhaging) with my second child during delivery. Her kindness, calmness and competence really set her apart. She was a blessing to so many. I will always feel beyond blessed that she was there for me.

Dr. Parr delivered both of my children. She was an excellent physician and always made me feel secure when I had fears during my pregnancies. She has helped to bring the world many generations of joy.
