Charles Thomson Obituary

Charles "Charlie" Stuart Thomson

Charles Stuart Thomson ("Charlie") of Excelsior, Minnesota, died suddenly and unexpectedly Friday, July 11, 2014 in Excelsior. Charlie, one of three sons of Stuart Oliver and Ruby Wikoff Thomson was born May 19, 1927 in Emporia. He worked as an engineer in Wisconsin and in Chicago. Later he and Marlyn moved to Minneapolis where he had his own business, Thomson Properties. Charlie was active in Excelsior's civic business, was a city commissioner and other civic organizations, respected and well liked in the Minneapolis community. He kept in touch with friends from high school days and was active in setting up and managing Emporia High School reunions held in Emporia. He had close friendships with former classmates and communicated fairly often with them. Charlie is survived by his wife Marlyn, son Joel of Minneapolis, daughters Amy of Minneapolis and Rebecca of Washington state. He is also survived by his only sister, Sue Thomson Hyde Hess of Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard and Harold. His daughter, Kathryn Jane died at birth. Charlie saw to the best care of his "so sweet" Marlyn even taking her on trips and cruises in her continuing long illness. She, with his remaining family, misses him as well as nieces Mary Ann Hyde Johnson of Overland Park, Jane Hyde of Wichita, Susan Hyde Holmes of Santa Fe and one nephew, Joe Hyde of Osage City. Graveside services and burial in Emporia are pending at Margaret Chalmers Thomson's family plot, his Scottish great-grandmother, at Maplewood Cemetery there. Memorial services in Minnesota are to be at a later date there.

Charlie was a great neighbor. When our daughter had a world war II project for school, Charlie arranged a friend of his to supply his uniform for Jennie and her classmate/partner to bring to school as a part of their project. They scored 100% for their project, most assuredly because of the uniform. That was the first "A" ever for Jennie's classmate.
Charlie was wonderful to Marilyn.
We will so miss Charlie's green van going down the wrong way on First Street the 30' between the alley and Courtland.
Charlie was a good man.

My sympathy goes out to all of Charlie's family. I grew up with Charlie on Congress Street. He was such a kind and thoughtful man and will be missed by all who knew him.
