An absolutely wonderful person who pushed you to be better and to not quit. He wanted to see all of his students earn that finish line and I still feel the effects of his mentorship almost 13 years later after we said goodbye.
Chuck put my name in the hat for an opportunity to move to Alaska and not only reconnect with my Inupiaq heritage but to also work in species conservation. Thanks for believing in me.

Dr. Haines will always be the man that taught me to relax, take risks, & trust the process. He showed us that science was fun- & that fun is a necessary ingredient for our lives. He came into my life just when I needed it & I'm so grateful he was able to be that person & mentor for many here at Haskell. I share my deepest condolences for his family who supported him to do the great things he did, & everyone else who's impacted. Let's remember his lessons & keep them close to our hearts, & work to protect the natural spaces where we live. To keep doing what we can where we can. He was an example of that kind of caretaking. Much love!

I haven't seen Chuck in quite a long time.
We met at a night class at JCCC, chemistry, if memory serves.
We hit it off right away. Just like Chuck seemed to do with everyone that he came in contact with. Many years later we ran into each other, after both of us had relocated to Lawrence. I was surprised learning about his position at Haskell. And then again, I wasn't.
Chuck was a gentle spirit, and I'm lucky to have known a man of his character and qualities.
