I am deeply saddened to hear of Chuck's passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to Beth, Nathan, Yuki and all his family, friends and colleagues.
I knew Chuck since I was a freshman at KU (a long time ago!). He was always kind, gracious and helpful to me. He, along with Tommy Johnson, were my two musical mentors in Jazz, helping me learn tunes and hiring me for gigs. I played many gigs with Chuck over the years and was appreciative of his love of music, his rapport with people and his good nature. He will be missed. Rest in peace, Chuck.

I loved having conversations with Chuck at Oldfather Studios. He knew so much about art, film, and history! He led an interesting life and shared some of his memories. Chuck was a warm and giving man. He touched many lives, including my own. He will not be forgotten. Sincere condolences to Beth and the whole family.

Although I only met Chuck Berg a few times, I had the intriguing challenge and joy of organizing his many photos, concert programs, etc. of hundreds of jazz artists, a collection now in Murphy Hall music library. It was also exciting and rewarding to work on the library event, "Rhythm and Meaning, Jazz at KU" (2013) where Chuck both spoke and played. I am grateful to have met Chuck Berg and send my sincere condolences to his wife, family and friends. Jane Hoyt

Chuck Berg was my most favorite professor during my time at KU. He made every class enjoyable and fun. I especially loved the days when he would play music for the class instead of watching a film. His spontaneous nature made his classes ones you never wanted to miss. As we will miss him as a presence in the physical world, the next world has received one special human being. Thank you, Chuck Berg, for giving your students such enlightenment and knowledge. It has carried forth in my life.

Charles Berg was a complex man. His gregarious manner, friendly demeanor and openness were conscious choices. Having worked very closely with Chuck at various times, I discovered that, in addition to his expansive warmth, there was a piece of well-tempered, white-hot steel running down the middle of his soul. While he seldom chose to show that side of himself, it was always there. When needed, he placed it at the service of others. I was one of those who saw and benefited more than once from Chuck Berg's metal.

I cannot say enough good things about Professor Berg. Suffice it that he was kind, generous, and patient, that he was intelligent, thoughtful, and empathetic, that he was one of the truly good guys. He had a wonderful laugh and a better sense of humor. And needless to say he was a fine musician and scholar. My deepest sympathies to,all his family, and his many friends. Thank you, Chuck. Yours was a well-lived life, and all of us who knew you are better for it.

Professor Berg, or Chuck, as he always preferred to be called, was an unforgettable person in our lives. He was always open, friendly and ready to share his extensive knowledge of music and film with his pupils. He was enthusiastic about American Popular Culture, a subject he taught for many years, and he became a true mentor and friend for those who, like I was, were new to KU, to Kansas and the U.S., having arrived from foreign countries with this dream of studying film. Chuck, who passed on his love of Jazz and American movies on to us, we will always remember and be grateful to you. Blessings to Beth and to Nathan, Yuki and their children. R.I.P.
