Carol Mitchell Obituary

Carol Mitchell lost her hard-fought battle with cancer and passed on to be with God on Thursday, November 15th. Mom was a brilliant, loyal, loving mother, grandmother and sister. She was a committed educator, spending 25 years as a teacher in the Shawnee Mission School district, teaching mostly 2nd grade. Carol graduated from Drake University as a music major. After graduation she served her country as an officer for 3 years in the US Naval Reserves as a WAVE. She mastered the piano and multiple string instruments and thoroughly enjoyed playing in a local community orchestra. She was fiercely independent with an extreme love and passion for animals, especially rescues. In her life she cared for a passel of stray cats, dogs and other small animals. She was extremely proud of the achievements of her children and grandchildren. She touched the lives of all ages and didn't realize the power of her touch. The world is a better place because of her, and she will be sorely missed. Carol is survived by one sister, Margaret Omodt, three children: Sue, Matt and David, and six grandchildren: Julie, Hannah, Morgan, Trevor, Audrey and Griffin. She lived her last 48 years in Kansas City and Lawrence but she always referred to herself as an Iowa farm girl. Carol was especially close to her dad, Louis Larsen. She will be buried close by him at the Veterans Cemetery in her hometown of Newton, Iowa.
