C. Humbert Tinsman, Jr. passed away December 26, 2021 at Kansas City Hospice House following a lengthy illness. The son of C. Humbert and Julia Chandler Tinsman was born on April 13, 1933 in Kansas City Missouri.
Humbert attended Prairie Grade School. He graduated from Pembroke Country Day School in 1951, Princeton University in 1955 and Northwestern University's School of Business in 1959 following a two-year stint in the U.S. Army.
He was a lifelong member of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church. During his teenage years he served as an acolyte. He was also a Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
Humbert has had the pleasure of spending his entire work career in various business ventures with his brother, James E.C. Tinsman. In 1951 he, his brother and his father, Humbert Tinsman, Sr. served as principals in Capital Services, Inc., a commercial finance company, which was involved in leasing various types of personal property to businesses in the area. From 1985 to 1995, Humbert shared management responsibilities with his brother in the University State Bank, later renamed as The Bank of Kansas, in Lawrence, Kansas. In 1991 he and his brother formed what they initially called Horizon National Bank. It was later renamed NBKC Bank. He served as Vice Chairman of the Board of NBKC Bank.
Humbert's love of opera was stimulated by a music teacher at Prairie Grade School. In 1957 he joined the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Lyric Opera, an organization that he continued to support the remainder of his life. He served as President of the Kansas City Lyric Opera Board of Directors from 2000 to 2002. In 2000 Humbert became one of the founders of the Kansas City Lyric Opera Foundation. In 2003 he became President of the Foundation's Board of Directors.
Humbert was a manuscript collector. He specialized in the early letters of nineteenth century German opera composer, Richard Wagner. He was a member of the Manuscript Society and he served on the Board of Directors of that group. He and his wife traveled to many national and international meetings to study and view manuscripts as a result of his membership in that organization.
He has been a member of the Saint Luke's Hospital Board of Directors and
the Corinth Downs Homes Association Board. Other memberships include the Society of Fellows of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the President's Circle of the Linda Hall Library, the Kansas City Country Club, the River Club, the Drury Lane Investors, the University Club, the Mercury Club, Il Circolo Italiana and the Roaring Fork Club in Basalt, Colorado.
Humbert loved to study foreign languages, tackling French in high school, German during his military experiences and Spanish to compliment a business venture entered into in South America with his brother and cousin-in-law. Trips to Italy and Greece also inspired him to study Italian and Greek.
His favorite activities included playing tennis, playing golf, cycling, fishing, and cross-country skiing. Humbert loved to travel by plane, by train, by car, and by ship. He relished various activities with his family which included cruises, horseback riding adventures, fishing trips, and excursions to the Colorado mountains.
Humbert was predeceased by his parents. He leaves his wife of forty years, Carol Crosswhite Tinsman; a daughter, Katherine H. Tinsman and her son, Wyatt, of Lawrence, Kansas; a daughter, Penelope Tinsman Dunckel and her husband, Alan, of Genoa, Nevada: a son, C. Humbert Tinsman III and his two daughters, Julia and Eden: and a son, Robert W. Tinsman, his wife Kristen, and their two daughters, Lauren and Grace. Also surviving is a brother, James E. C. Tinsman and his wife Elizabeth, and many nephews, cousins and friends.
Due to Covid a private family service will take place. The service will take place at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church on Friday, December 31, 2021 at 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed at
