Beverly Cates Obituary

Funeral services for Beverly Laurine (Kring) Cates, 90, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2023, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. A burial will follow at Sutton Cemetery in Baldwin City, KS. She passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Neuvant House in Lawrence.

She was born August 19, 1933, in rural Baldwin City, KS, the daughter of Isaac Milton and Jessie Aileen (Truex) Kring.

She was a homemaker, sold Avon and worked for many years at Weaver's Department Store in Lawrence.

Beverly was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and volunteered for the Douglas County Visiting Nurses for over 35 years. Because of her volunteer activities with VNA, she was nominated for and was selected as the Wallace Galluzzi Volunteer of the Year winner through the Roger Hill Volunteer Center and the Home Care Hero Award from the Kansas Home Care Association. She was active in the North Lawrence Neighborhood Association for years.

She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities, never missing an opportunity to attend a concert, sporting event or birthday. Nothing made her happier than talking about their activities and antics. She was an avid sports fan, watching the Royals, KU basketball and football, Chiefs and most recently Sporting KC.

Beverly married Richard Owen Cates on January 4, 1953, in Vinland, KS. He preceded her in death on February 28, 2013.

Survivors include her daughter, Janice (Robert) White, son, Rick (Emily) Cates, son-in-law, Bob Lewis; nine grandchildren, Brandon (Lisa), Kristina, Larissa (Brent), Brad (Miranda), Chris (Josha), Robert, Owen, Brandon, Jessica (Jack); nine great grandchildren, Brianna (Sam), Matt (Kaylyn), Conner, Regan, Lilly, Alexis, Harper, Jackie, Jackson and one on the way.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Connie Lewis, siblings, Dale Kring, Emmett "Mutt" Kring, James "Jiggs" Kring, Lynette Martin, and Elizabeth "Beth" Shuck.

The family will greet friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Warren-McElwain.
