Betty Wilkerson Obituary

Betty Lou Wilkerson, a lifelong resident of Missouri and Kansas, died November 30, 2021 at the age of 88 surrounded by loved ones.

Betty Lou Brockway was born January 7, 1933 in Calhoun, Missouri. She attended school in Windsor, Missouri, graduating high school in 1950 as valedictorian. In 1953, she graduated from Research Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City as a registered nurse. She married Lloyd Wilkerson in 1954, with whom she spent the next 62 years as a loving wife. Betty worked as chief nurse in Research Hospital's maternity unit until 1958, when her son Brock was born. Son Brian followed a year later, and Betty spent the next few years at home caring for her beloved children.

In 1967, after completing her bachelor's degree in nursing, Betty worked at KU's Department of Nursing, eventually becoming assistant professor. During this time she completed her master's degree from the University of Missouri and continued her nursing career as the school nurse for 20 years at Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission West.

Betty found great meaning and comfort in her participation in church. Over the years she had been an active member of choirs, ministries, bible studies, and church circles. She served as a deacon, leader, and loving participant. Most recently she was a member of Country Club Christian Church, where she also served in the Anniversary Class.

Betty lived a rich life as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was kind, loyal, hardworking and loved by all, especially those who appreciated baked goods and a good game of bridge. Betty looked forward to joining in heaven her husband, Lloyd, and her son, Brock.

Betty's loss is felt by her son, Dr. Brian C. Wilkerson and wife Joni, her grandchildren Elizabeth and Caroline Wilkerson, Brian Wilkerson Jr., Alissa Schrank, her husband Tony and great granddaughter Rosie, Mallory Wilkerson and her fiancé Drake Debiasse, grandchildren Tyler Gittins, Jonathan Gittins, his wife Anna and great-granddaughter Alix Louise. She will also be dearly missed by her daughters-in-law Chris Parker Wilkerson, Cathy Law, her nieces Marsha Williamson and Cindy Istre and their families, and numerous other nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends.

A special thank-you to the staff and her many dear friends at Foxwood Springs.

God Bless you, Betty. We will all be together again someday.

A celebration of Betty's life will be Saturday, December 11 at 11:00 at Country Club Christian Church, followed by a reception immediately after in the church's Social Hall. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 a.m.
