Bertha Anne Cameron

Bertha Anne (Garrett) Cameron, age 87 of Shawnee, Kansas passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014. Funeral Services were held 7:00 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 20th at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home, her family received friends one hour prior to the service also at the funeral home. Burial followed the next day at 1:00 p.m. in Miami, OK., where she was laid to rest with her ancestors in the Williams Coal Creek Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Monticello Community Historical Society or the Monticello United Methodist Church both in care of the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home.

Bertha was born on May 30, 1927 in Kansas City, Kansas the oldest of three children born to Edward (Babe) and Ruth Garrett and lived the majority of her life in the Monticello area of Shawnee, Kansas. She attended grade school in Wilder, KS., then graduated from Bonner Springs High School and went on to work at TWA from 1945 to 1960 as a Teletype Operator. Bertha was a Charter Member and inspiration of the Monticello Community Historical Society where she held many positions including President and Vice President. She was also very active in the Monticello United Methodist Church and served in many capacities in the local church and at the District and Conference Level of United Methodist Women, including but not limited to, Kansas City District President. Being of Shawnee Indian decent she was very active in the Shawnee Tribe in Miami, OK. "In the most glowing way she was the Shawnee tribes ambassador to the State of Kansas and local governments in our last reservation. This alone does not cover what she did for the Shawnee or what she meant to the tribal government." Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 44 years Jim Cameron and recently by her brother Edward Hervey Garrett. Survivors include sister, Jeannine Gallagher of Bonner Springs, KS., Sister-in-law Judy Garrett of rural Bonner Springs, KS. nephew Vince Garrett of the home and niece Debe Birzer of Bonner Springs, KS. grandnieces Kimberly Wendleton and Stacy Masters, grandnephew's MacArthur and Marcus Birzer and a host of extended family and friends.
