Bernice Gergick Obituary
Bernice A.( Sutulovich) Gergick, 85, died August 2, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospice
House from burns received after a fall in the shower at her home in Tonganoxie, KS. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 7 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 708 N. 4th St., KC, KS, with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM at the church. Burial will be after the Mass at Gate of Heaven in KC, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Luke's Hospice House, 4225 Baltimore Ave., KC, MO 64111, St. John the Baptist Restoration Fund, Sacred Heart Building Fund or to the Sisters, Servants of Mary.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Clarence Gergick in 2006 and 9 of her 11 siblings. Survivors include three sons, Clarence B. Gergick, Overland Park, Michael Gergick, Kansas City, Paul Gergick, Tonganoxie and 2 daughters, Catherine Moreland, Basehor and Rose Mary Gergick, Tonganoxie, 7 grandchildren, Amy and Jared Moreland, Summer Myers, Shyanne , Sinjan, and Abby Gergick, and Laura Sachen and 3 great-grandchildren, Cassidi, Christien, and Chase Nobles.
Bernice worked for 18 years at Tonganoxie Elementary School as custodian and later as Library Media Aide. During that time, every year she gave her time to work with kindergarten classes to help them make Easter bunnies and chicks molded from sugar, and she helped sixth graders make sugar eggs with Easter scenes inside. Over the years, dozens of children proudly packed up their treasured creations and carried them home. It was not unusual for children to come up to Bernice years later and tell her how they still had the sugar decorations made many years before.
Bernice also made delicious decorated cakes for birthdays and weddings. Generations of people have celebrated special occasions with the help of a cake from Bernice's kitchen. She was also a wonderful baker with her specialty being povitica, wonderful nut bread from Croatia, where her family came from. If you were lucky enough to receive one of those loaves at Christmas or Easter, you can be sure you were a treasured friend. You were luckier still if you happened to be one of the hundreds of friends who received an invitation to come to Bernice's kitchen for personal povitica-making lessons. Those day-long experiences are legendary among those who were fortunate enough to attend them. Bernice will be greatly missed by friends and family.

Cathy..you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Your mother was joy and I enjoyed talking with her always. I will think of her often. She always made me smile. She will always be in my heart at Easter when I put out the decorations she gave me. WIll miss her and thinking of you always.

I was very sad to hear this. Rosemary, I have happy memories of overnights at your house in KCK and Tongie. Your mom always seemed to be in the kitchen baking a cake and running Mike and Paul out of the house when they were ornery. My thoughts are with all of you.

My heart is heavy for all of you at this time of loss. Bernice always had a hug for me any time I was at the house either visiting or helping Rosemary with therapy. Will miss her and our visits. I also had the privilege of working with her and Clarence at the school. Now they are together again. Love to all!
