If there had been many more Bobbis in America in the 20th century, there would have been no President Trump in the 21st century. Americans would have been too smart, too informed, too decent, too civilized, and of course, its population of nearly 1 billion would have been overwhelmingly liberal.
Well, okay, Bobbi didn't save the world but she made it a much better, kinder, smarter place for so many people.
I knew Bobbi best when as a teenager I fell in love with Paula from Finland, whom the Backus family had generously welcomed into their Kansas home. First love is intense and for me full of immaturity and insecurity. For over 2 years Barbara had a parental relationship with us, respecting and advising us though she wisely had reservations. Paula and I never married but we became friends again later in life, friends who can share the experiences of the late 1960's when Backus family life was a whirlwind of Ozzie Senior, 6 rambunctious children and at the stable center Bobbi, making it all work.
Long, long ago, but still a special part of my life.
Thanks, Bobbi!

Tony I am sorry for the loss of your mother. She clearly was a remarkable woman and left a legacy of a life well lived and a great son. I hope that you find peace in the fond memories you have of the time she graced this earth.

Richie, Tony and the entire Backus family and extended family, my sincerest thoughts are with you at this time. Your Mom sounds like an amazing woman. I am sorry I never had the chance to meet her. Have the party of a lifetime in her memory. Sounds like she will be there celebrating a life well lived.

My wonderful Nana: thank you for wonderful childhood memories of Backus retreat in the Adirondack's, lunch at Scuzi, and $10 for every birthday. I so admire you and will be sure to carry on your legacy of greatness at Yale.
All my love,
Chandler

I will never forget how kind and welcoming she was to the friends of her children. I got a big hug from her for helping to clean the house for Russian Easter, which included a visit from the governor. Nothing but fond memories of Bobby. My sympathy to the family.
