Tim Hull
April 23, 2024
On this day, the anniversary of his passing, I will plant a redbud tree in memory of Dr. Torres. These trees may not have been all that special to him but I imagine he would have appreciated, perhaps even remarked at some length about their sturdiness and persistence. I will think of him as I watch the tree take hold and begin its new life and with each passing day and year gain strength and vigor. I admired his dedication and determination and will always be grateful for his influence on me.

Tim Hull, BS Botany, KU class of 1975
January 7, 2024
I am an insignificant speck in the life of Dr. Torres, a student groping for direction during my time at KU. I found myself working and learning under the tutelage of Dr. Torres and his PhD aspirant, Ike, in his lab during 1974 and until my graduation in 1975. He entrusted me to care for the greenhouse on campus during the hot summer months, coddling and watering his beloved sunflower plants. Unfortunately, I largely failed to properly nourish and care for the plants as most of them ultimately withered and underperformed. Although clearly disappointed, Dr. Torres maintained his composure and patience, offering suggestions that might improve my future attempts at greenhouse management.
I was profoundly influenced by Dr. Torres and will forever remain grateful to him for his patience and understanding. I write this after a long career in medicine, now retired for 11 years, but somehow still clinging to memories of those months I spent within his sphere and wondering on occasion what might have been had I chosen a different path of academic research.
I want to thank his family for being the foundation of his life. Without you, I would not have experienced the teaching and influence of such a remarkable person.

Dear Andy is a reason for where I am here today. May his soul rest in peace and may God grant his wife, Georgiana, and his family members the strength to endure this great pain. I will always remember his kindness. Always, he is alive in my heart.
