A. Viola Howard

Funeral Services for A. Viola Howard, 93, Lawrence, KS will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence with Father John Schmeidler officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. She died on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Hillside Village Assisted Living in DeSoto, KS.

She was born on September 20, 1919 in Spencer, NE, the daughter of Pete and Catherine Potthoff Stein. The family moved to Valley Falls, KS when she was a small child.

Viola was a retired sales clerk and assistant manager from the Sears Roebuck & Company. She retired in 1984 after 25 years with the company.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

She was married to Robert C. "Bob" Howard on October 14, 1939 in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death March 4, 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Howard and wife, Louise, and Dean Howard and wife, Wanda, all of Lawrence, KS; five grandchildren, Jama Carter, Todd Howard, Gary Howard (wife, Lisa), Bruce (wife, Debi) Howard and Tammy (husband, Jon) Barta and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and two sisters.

The family will greet friends from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses or to the Southern Care Hospice and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

So sorry to hear of Viola's death. I was a neighbor of hers at Vermont Towers, and never saw her without a smile. I have lost a friend.
