Shirley Sikes Goodwin, 89, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully in her sleep and went home to be with our lord in heaven on Saturday, May 4, 2024.
She was born in Wilmington, NC, on September 6, 1934, to the late Leamon Elree Sikes and Goldia Batson Sikes.
Shirley was a jack of many trades. She worked in various historic movie theaters throughout Wilmington, such as The Bijou, The Bailey, and the Starway. She spent many years working at Belk-Williams and later Belk-Berry downtown before it moved to its current location at the mall. She also spent quite a bit of her life working in New Hanover County schools as a cafeteria assistant, later she worked at New Hanover Regional Medical Center as a member of Television services where she would rent TV’s to patients for a daily or weekly rate. Upon the inclusion of the TV service with the cost of a hospital stay Shirley returned to NHC schools, working full time at DC Virgo Middle and then Pine Valley Elementary before moving to a substitute position that led to her serving lunch at many different schools all over the county. Her favorites are Ashley High School, Murray Middle, and Codington Elementary. She attended Al-anon for many years with her husband where she honed her faith, and met many lifelong friends. Shirley was an avid crafter her favorite activities included cross stitch, crochet, and plastic canvas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Goodwin, Sr. (J.W); son, James W. Goodwin, Jr. (Jay) and sisters, Linda Hunt and Vivian Hawkins.
Survivors include her daughter, Vickie Shondel; grandchildren, Stephen Hobbs, April Shondel, and Aryon Shondel; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and her granddog, Jovi.
A funeral service will be held in Wilmington at 11 am, Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Andrews Market Street chapel.
