Sarah Brockman Obituary

Sarah Spencer Brockman

Sarah Spencer Brockman, 73, of Lynchburg, passed away on Monday, January 19th. She was the devoted wife of the late John Powell Brockman and a loving mother, grandmother, and nurse whose life was defined by service to others.

Born in Lynchburg on July 16, 1952, Sarah was the daughter of the late Francis Hugo Spencer and Frances Agee Spencer. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Martha Frances Perrow.

For nearly 30 years, Sarah served as an operating room nurse, dedicating her life to caring for others with skill, compassion, and quiet strength. Her work was more than a career, it was a calling. Through her steady hands and generous heart, she touched countless lives and earned the respect and gratitude of colleagues and patients alike.

Above all else, Sarah cherished her family. She was the proud mother of three children and a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Time spent with her family brought her the greatest joy, and her love for them was constant, unconditional, and unwavering.

Sarah will be remembered for her warmth, resilience, and selfless spirit. Her legacy lives on through the family she adored and the many lives she helped heal.

She is survived by her three children, Sarah Dabney White (Bryon), John Powell Brockman, Jr., and Laura Spencer Brockman; nine grandchildren, Abigayle Spencer White, Grace Anne White, Walker Addison Bryan, Madeline Frances Bryan, Katherine Spencer Bryan, Skylar Maddison Brockman, Blake Powell Brockman, Peyton Douglas Brockman, and Teagan Jaymes White; her brother, John Hugo Spencer (Kitty); and her brother-in-law, Edmund Wingfield Perrow, Sr.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A private graveside service for family will be held at Amherst Cemetery.

Sarah and I were in nursing school together and remained friends afterwards. She was witty, kind, smart, and loved her family. I am blessed to have known her.

Sarah and I worked together for many years at VBH. She was a member of a wonderful, dedicated, and caring team of professional nurses who guided patients through the difficult experiences of surgery, ensured excellent care, and followed them to recovery. Sarah was one of those who put everything into patient care and I feel honored to have known her. My deep condolences to her family and respect for her memory. My deepest sympathy to each of you. I also shared many special times at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church with Sarah and her family. Our children also grew up together in the church. She and her husband are reunited and the legacy left is strong.

As a former member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church there was a strong friendship in family and youth growing up. Sarah was always kind and greeted you with a smile. My condolences to the family. Hold on to the memories for they last a lifetime.
