James Carta Obituary

Janesville, WI - James 'Jim' C. Carta, age 97, passed away with family by his side on Thursday, Mar. 12, 2026, at SSM St. Mary Hospital, Madison. He was born on August 18, 1928, in Janesville to Carl and Concetta Carta. He earned his GED while serving his country in the U.S. Navy and was a proud WWII Veteran. He would marry the love of his life Jean E. Bowdin on Mar. 4, 1949, at St. Patrick Catholic Church and spent the next 75 years with her. She would precede him in death on Mar. 27, 2024. Jim worked for over 30 years in the office for GM in Janesville and retired in 1987.

Jim, aka Jumping Jimmy, enjoyed traveling with his family, watching westerns, the news, and golf. He also enjoyed watching the Packers and being a season ticket holder for many years. Later in life he enjoyed smoking his cigars and just being with family. He was a member of the Legion, Moose, and a founding member of St. William Catholic Church. Jim traveled to Colorado and Florida multiple times and enjoyed camping throughout the years with family and friends. Jim had many lifetime friends, and they had insurmountable fun and good times together. Everyone has a story about Jim and many happy memories.

Jim is survived by his daughters: Vickie (Jack) Myers and Laurie (Tim) Hamilton; grandchildren: Lisa Hamilton (Nick), Nathan (Michelle) Pennycook, Kacey Pennycook (Jim), Tiffany (Eric) Lancaster, and Tyler Hamilton (Linda); great grandchildren: Kayla Hamilton and Alex Chesmore. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jean; his son, William Carta; granddaughter Dena DeYoung; and siblings: Mickey Carta, Josephine Glass, M. Virgina 'Virg' Rismeyer, and Lillian 'Lil' Raasch.

Jim was a great father, grandfather and friend who everyone loved! He lived life the way he wanted to live it!

A Celebration of Life with Military Honors will be held for James on March 20, 2026, at 11:00AM at the APFEL WOLFE FUNERAL HOME, with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M until time of service at the FUNERAL HOME. A luncheon will follow the services.
