Joseph Newton Obituary

Joseph "Buzzy" Turner Newton III CHARLESTON - Joseph "Buzzy" Turner Newton III, 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Rebecca Risher Newton, entered into eternal rest Friday, January 24, 2025. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 30, 2025 in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday January 29, 2025 in the Downtown Chapel from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Buzzy was born November 28, 1940 in Statesboro, Georgia, son of the late Joseph Turner Newton, Jr. and Ruby Scott Newton. He received a Bachelor's degree in business from the University of South Carolina. Buzzy joined the family business in 1962 at Piggly Wiggly Carolina Corporation. After his father retired in 1979, he was named President and CEO. Buzzy was at the helm of Piggly Wiggly until he retired after 45 years with the company in April 2007 and became Chairman of the Board. He still found himself regularly critiquing the weekly grocery store circulars well into retirement. The coast of Charleston was his home, but he loved the time he spent with his wife and beloved King Charles Spaniel in the Western North Carolina Mountains. Buzzy is survived by his wife, Rebecca; son, James Tradd Newton (Louise "Weesie") of Charleston, SC; daughter, Chauncey Finch Boykin (Russell) of Mount Pleasant, SC; stepson, Charles Maccrea Finch (Lindsay); five grandchildren: James Tradd Newton, Jr., Joseph Warren Newton (Clara), and Julia Chantler Newton, Adelyn Rae Finch and Everly Grace Finch; one great-grandchild, Warren Haynes Newton; two sisters: Marion Newton Schools and Joanne Newton Ayers both of Mount Pleasant, SC. He was predeceased by his brother, Harold Scott Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692. The greater Charleston community has lost a wonderful person, one who contributed so very much to many causes. Buzzy meant a lot to me and helped me in numerous ways, including being a campaign adviser and treasurer. We worked together on various projects. He was a kind and effective leader. He certainly made the world a better place.
