Major Lois A. Matt, USAF NC (Ret.)
July 6, 1937 - December 14, 2024
Major Matt was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Joseph and Garnet Matt (née Minebroker). She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Elizabeth Dix and Barbara Stotsky, and her brother Joseph Carl. She is survived by her brothers, Ronald (Geraldine), John (Carol), Arthur (Nancy), Dr. Frances Matt; brother-in-law, Robert Stotsky; and numerous nephews and nieces.
After joining the USAF Nurse Corps in 1963 with assignments to MacDill AFB, Florida; RAF Lakenheath, England; and Sheppard AFB, Texas, Major Matt graduated from the Flight Nurse Training School at Brooks AFB School of Aerospace Medicine. She was immediately assigned to the 903rd Air Evacuation Squadron in Vietnam, a position responsible for the standardization of medical evacuation care of the wounded across all branches of military service.
She was awarded: the Air Medal with 3 Oak Clusters for flying 130 combat medical casualty missions in Vietnam, the Meritorious Service Medal 3rd Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Commendation Medal with 2nd Leaf Cluster, and the Vietnam Defense Medal.
Later assignments included Dyess AFB, Texas and Wilford Hall Medical Center, where she was the supervisor of the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. She was the recipient of the Texas Air Force Nurse of the Year Award, and her military service and accomplishments are recorded at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.
