VELMA MAE BROOKSHIRE
Velma Mae Brookshire passed from this world on June 3, 2025, at her home in Craig, Colorado. She was born in Fowler, Colorado on December 16, 1930, to James W. Six and Hazel E. (Ford) Six. She was the youngest of 7 siblings.
She grew up in Las Animas, Colorado, and graduated from Bent County High in 1948. She was an active child and a bit of a Tomboy. One of her greatest loves was dancing and she was a real Jitterbug champ. She married her high school sweetheart Joe Brookshire in December 1949 when he was home on leave from the Navy.
The young couple made their home in Las Animas. They welcomed a daughter Debbie in 1954 and sons, Joe in 1956 and David in 1961. In 1965, the family relocated to Craig, Colorado. Velma began working as a dental assistant right out of high school and worked for 4 different dentists in her career.
She retired in 1984 from Craig's own Dr. Leo Schneider's practice. For the next 30 years, Joe and Velma enjoyed the winters in their second home in Dolan Springs Arizona. Velma was an avid fisherman and spent many days on Lake Meade pulling in her catch. She hosted many childhood friends at her Arizona home for card games and gambling in nearby Laughlin, Nevada. Velma was an excellent seamstress. Her other hobbies included working jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, and fishing. She loved playing bridge and Scrabble with her girlfriends. She was always available anytime to babysit her grandchildren and had a close relationship with each of them.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Emma, Leonard, Lucille, Evelyn, Glen, and Gilbert, as well as son-in-law Gary Roberts.
She is survived by her husband Joe, and her children Debbie, Joe (Linda), and David. Grandchildren: Graham (Tiffani) Roberts, Paige Roberts, Shawn (Alesha) Brookshire, Ryan (Alexia) Brookshire, Riley (Samantha) Brookshire and Jesse Brookshire. Great-Grandchildren: Marie and William Roberts, Luke and Kian Brookshire, Renee and Willa Brookshire, Ivan, and Isla Chavez, and Bryce and Kate Brookshire. One sister-in-law: Zola Six and numerous nieces and nephews as well as her caregivers Trina Tousley and Lora Stockman.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 9, 2025, at Grant Mortuary. A reception will follow at the Center of Craig.
