Richard (Dick) Verne Moore passed away peacefully at his home in Lawrence, Kansas on April 22, 2021, at the age of 94.
Dick, son of Earnest V. Moore and Minnie Moore of Canton, Illinois was born on December 26, 1926. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and faithfully served in Hawaii during World War II for two years. After his discharge, he returned home and met Jane Anne Woodcock also of Canton, at the family-owned Huddle Cafe. They were married in Canton on June 2nd, 1951. Jane preceded Dick in death in 2019.
As an entrepreneur, Dick started and managed several restaurants over the years, including Sandy's restaurant in Canton. A few years later an opportunity arose to open the flagship Carol Lee Donuts shop, in Lawrence, KS. He took advantage of this and moved his family to Lawrence and opened the doors in 1971, in a prime 23rd Street location.
Dick and Jane worked side-by-side from midnight to early afternoon every day, creating donuts and a legendary customer following. Despite these long hours, they always kept a focus on raising their family.
Dick is survived by his 4 children, Harry (Shirley) Moore, Mark (Debi) Moore, Lisa (Brent) Flanders, and Laura (John) Landgrebe. Also surviving are grandchildren, Heather Allison, Christopher (Candace) Moore, Patrick (Lisa) Moore, Camron (Meghan) Flanders, Keri (Loren) Drummond, Colin Flanders, Aric Moore, Nick Moore, Samantha (Clayton) Galloway, and Jacob Landgrebe. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A private graveside funeral will be held on May 7th at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. In place of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Richard's name to the American Heart Association or the KU Clinical Research Center and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
