Thomas Schoenberg Obituary

Thomas G. Schoenberg, 81, longtime resident of Lemont and Brookfield, went home to Heaven on Thursday. Tom grew up in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago. He attended Audubon Elementary and then Lane Tech High School. Tom earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Northwestern University. His entire career was spent in the cosmetics industry, developing products used in shampoos and soaps. He worked in laboratories and later became head of international sales for McIntyre Chemical, a job that gave him the opportunity to travel the world.

After retiring in 2006, Tom continued contributing to his profession by starting his own consulting company and writing articles for industry publications as recently as this year. A devout Catholic, Tom raised a family of seven children with his wife of 50 years, Nancy. He enjoyed fishing, jogging, golf, reading, and singing in the choir at Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs. An avid gardener, Tom was always looking for new hobbies in his yard, such as adding bee hives and harvesting honey. His favorite moments involved spending time with family and friends, hosting get-togethers at his home, and annual summer trips to Minnesota.

After a short and sudden illness, Tom died peacefully surrounded by his children and loving wife Nancy. He was preceded in death by his father Eugene, his mother Margaret and his sister Marge. He’s survived by his wife, Nancy, sons Tom (Kristen), Mike (Carrie), Bryan (Beth), John (Amy), Dan, Mark (Jenny) and daughter Amy Soub (Ash), as well as 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Arlene Michaelis (Siegfried) and several nephews.

Hi Nancy and the rest of the Schoenberg family. I have a lot of fond memories working with Tom dating back 30 years at McIntyre. Kind of a Dad joke, but he was always asking for "Nackle" while working in the lab. He was referring of course to table salt, or NaCl. Makes me smile whenever I think about that. Tom was one of my early mentors along with Rich, Bob and Jim and I'll never forget all the time we spent together in the early years of my career. Tom was a great guy, and he loved his family so much! I'll miss him and we're praying for all of you while he smiles down upon us with the Lord in heaven. God bless you.

Nancy, I am sorry for your loss. I met your husband once at our reunion. I knew
nothing about him except that he was your husband. His biography supplied a lot more information about him. He was a dynamic person . Accept my condolences. Gene Jobin

Tom was one of those people we could all wish to work with or work for. Competent, compassionate, giving. He gave his best to his employer, to his coworkers and to his clients. The legacy of his work continues as part of the fabric of the personal care products industry.
His greater legacy, though, is in his earthly family and the family of faith with whom he shared the joys and the disappointments of this world, always grounded in and informed by a faith in our living savior, Jesus Christ, with whom he now rests, awaiting a new beginning where there will be no more sorrow, and his God reigns in goodness, forever and ever. Amen!

Tom wore many hats and carried out many roles so well. For me it was as a best friend's husband for 51 years. He always made sure Nancy could spend time with friends despite their many family and work responsibilities. He graciously made everyone feel welcome in their home, and often sent you home with something from his garden or the treasured jar of honey, after it was ready.
"Uncle" Tom was a Role Model in both faith and life for both my sons, helped them to perfect their fishing skills, and enjoy many years of vacations together at the cabins in Minnesota. Now they are grown and fathers themselves, but every time I saw or talked with Tom he would always ask, "How are the boys doing?" He was genuinely proud of their accomplishments and supported their efforts. That was Tom, God and family first, but friends, whom he treated like family, benefitted next. You will be missed by all of us.

Here are just a few images of the life of my dad, the greatest man I’ve ever known. He was loved by so many. While he will be greatly missed, his legacy will live on in his children, friends, and all those he encountered.

Tom has been part of my life for over 75 years. I could throw a baseball from my back porch to his backyard. We were close on all fronts and especially how we dealt with life through adulthood! We relied on each other’s advice as we entered marriage and started families. For example, we both converted to Catholicism, married former nuns, were each other’s best man, have been married over 50 years, and have large families! Even though Ann and I moved from the Chicago area over 40 years we remained the best of friends despite the distance. He was the warmest, most loyal, and gentle person I knew. His faith in God and heaven were real and rock solid. There is no doubt in our mind that he is with God. We miss him and hope to some day to be where he is now! Ann & Lynn Bock

So happy he got to have so many and share their lives. I have nothing but fond memories of Tom and our friendship and working relationship. Joe and I send our deepest sympathy to you all.

Dear Nancy,
Our hearts are breaking with yours at the devastating loss of Tom. He was one of kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever known. Generous with his time and knowledge, he was a pillar of our industry. I never heard him say an unkind word in the more than 30 years I’ve known him. It is with the deepest sympathy I express my condolences for the profound loss of your beloved Tom, husband, father, friend. May his memory be eternal!

Tom, my comrade-in-arms left us and in peace. So much memories and fond moments will remain forever. Time we spent making sales calls, cracking jokes in-between and rushing to airports after meetings are some unforgettable travel trips we had almost annually in SE Asia. Customers still remember you today as a formulation Guru. Personally you are more than a Guru but my Mentor. It was you who made things worked and contributed to the success of Singapore operation.
Beside work you were part of family. You called once a while to share your enthusiasm over business dealings and whatnots. The last time we chatted was 3 months ago and I assured you that we (Jennifer too) will come to see you after the pandemic is over. I guess we missed the chance.
Today we read your FB of your passing. We lost a real friend but you live in our heart any moment of time.
You had lived a fulfilling and happy life.
Good-bye my friend, Adios.
Adrian And Jennifer.

Uncle Tom had a way of making everyone feel welcome and special when they visited. As someone who married into the family, I was one of the benefactors of that particular type of kindness.
He always made an effort to keep in touch and enabled the family to maintain ties and a sense of “connectedness” through his willingness to host the annual family picnic. He meant so much to so many and will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor, his commitment to family/church, his generosity and his love of life.
He will be deeply missed by many.

Tom touched so many people in his career and I am lucky to be over of them. In fact, I feel like I have been following in Tom's footsteps my whole life... Same schools, same chemical companies, same church. I can only hope to live a life so blessed. My life is richer for having Tom and Nancy in it.

Tom, or Mr.Schoenberg as I called him, was truly one of a kind. In a world where so many of us try to imitate others he was so unique and did things his way, which I always admired. I will miss golfing with him where he loved pointing out I was in the woods a lot, watching him stand on picnic tables up in Minnesota in hopes of getting better reception, him chuckling at my incredibly dumb jokes and all the conversations we had. He loved to teach and was incredibly smart. I always felt like I learned something new each and every time I talked to him. My condolences go out to all his friends and the Schoenberg family. Rest in peace Mr.Schoenberg, you will be missed. I look forward to teeing it up with you again one day.

Tom, We've been friends for over 30 years and it is a great gift. You are remarkable and now that you are in Heaven, your work is done. Maybe they will give you a star to shine since you always needed to work on earth.
There is no one like you: a "one-of-a-kind" friend. Be happy and surely take care of Nancy, the love of your life.

Tom, you'll be greatly missed. I moved from Chicago in 1968 so I missed a lot of family things. You always kept in touch and wanted to know about my family as well as share your stories. You always welcomed my family into your home when we would be in Chicago. I loved that about you. You and Nancy have made so many people feel special. Family picnics will not be the same. You were a wonderful cousin.

Our running days turned to 10 mile walks that turned into meeting for breakfast. Yesterday I took a walk through the forest preserve where you, I and Eddie walked. I can’t forget the Schoenberg Open, the shared stories of camping and fishing in the Boundary Waters and Quetico Provincial Park, learning about beekeeping and enjoying the fruits of your labors and the honey it provided for so many years. Thanks Tom for your friendship and for so many wonderful memories.

Tom was truly one of a kind. A great mentor, comedian, and family man. I spent hundreds of hours making sales calls with Tom. He always liked to stop for the homemade soup and a slice of pie in Pestigo, Wi. If there was a Salesman’s Hall of Fame, Tom would be in it, even though he really enjoyed fishing so much more.
He was a great man that will be forever missed.
