Myrtle Wilson Obituary

Myrtle Ann Wilson, 81, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Myrtle Ann Wilson was born in Jefferson, Texas on Tuesday, January 11, 1945 to the parentage of Earnest Ray Wilson and Mattie Lee Scott Wilson.  She was the fourth child out of ten children.  At an early age, Myrtle accepted Christ and united with Judea Baptist Church in Jefferson, Texas where she was baptized.  In 1954, the family moved to Floyd, Texas where Myrtle united with Mt. Elem Baptist Church.  Myrtle received her formal education from Judea Public School in Jefferson, Texas and St. Paul School District in Neylandville, Texas, graduating with the Class of 1963.  After graduation, Myrtle went to live in Wichita, Kansas for about eighteen months before moving back to Floyd, Texas.

Myrtle was a faithful member of Mt. Elem Baptist Church in Floyd, Texas (presently in Greenville, Texas) for many years where she was a dedicated and faithful member of the choir.  In 1989, Myrtle moved her membership to Starlight Gospel Church in Garland, Texas under the leadership of Apostle Rosetta Canady where she soon became a member of the choir.  Myrtle was called into the ministry and she preached her first sermon in February, 1994.  She was licensed and ordained on February 13, 1994 at Starlight Gospel Church by Pastor Rosetta Canady.  In 1997, Myrtle joined New United Church in Greenville, Texas where she was a dedicated and faithful member of the choir, a Sunday School teacher and the Mother of the Church.  Myrtle remained a faithful member until her health started to decline.
Myrtle began singing with her siblings when she was a little girl and the group became known as the Starlight Gospel Singers. She traveled and sang with the Starlights for over forty years until the group disbanded in 1999.  Myrtle’s task in the group was to maintain the group’s singing wardrobe and she did an awesome job. The robes and dresses were always ready when the group had a singing engagement.  She had a natural ability for sewing.  She would make large fashionable handkerchiefs for women; she made beautiful corsage and hair bows.  For weddings, Myrtle would make beautiful bride and bridesmaids’ bouquets and boutonnières for men.

Myrtle never married and she never had any children.  All of her nieces and nephews were her children.  Over the years, Myrtle was employed by various companies which included Varo Industries in Garland, Texas, Lance Inc.  Micron Industries and Greenville Herald Banner.  In the eighties, Myrtle operated her own dress shop, “Starlight Designs and Fashions in Garland. Texas.  On her way home from her dress shop one day in November, 1988, Myrtle had picked up her sister, Minnie from her job in McKinney, Texas - they were traveling to Greenville on Highway 380 when an accident occurred and the car ran off the highway.  After Myrtle recovered from her injuries, she worked in home health care.  She was employed over the years by Jordan Health Care, Cooper Home Health and Red River Home Health for seven years or more until April, 2021 as her health started to decline.

Loved ones left to cherish Myrtle’s precious memory:  a sister, Mary Wilson Williams (Willie) of Greenville, Texas; two brothers, Smith Wilson (Sandra) of Garland, Texas and George Wilson (Karen Viator) of Quinlan, Texas; ten nieces; five nephews and a host of great great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and her New United Church family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnest Ray Wilson and Mattie Lee Scott Wilson; five sisters, Shirley, Earnestine, Lula, Minnie and Rosetta; two brothers, Ray Lee and Wayne; a sister-in-law, Anna; a brother-in-law, Ferman, Sr.; three nieces and six nephews.
