Michael Bush Obituary

Michael Anthony Bush unexpectedly passed away in Milwaukee on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the age of 56. He was the beloved son of the late Brian “Barry” Bush and the late Floretta T. Vincere, and he was the adored brother of Sheila (Bernie Silva), Amber, and Dylan Bush. He was the loving stepson of Burton “Buddy” Hurwitz and the cherished companion of Karina Schafer. Michael will be greatly missed by many additional loving relatives and dear friends as well. His loved ones are deeply saddened by his sudden death.

Michael was a true “gentle man”—kind and humble with a pure and open heart. He walked in many circles and befriended people of all ages and types, believing everyone has value. He listened attentively and he spoke thoughtfully; respectful and meaningful interactions mattered to him. But Michael was also playful and quick-witted, and he laughed easily. Whether it was impromptu dancing, making quips as a skilled wordsmith or participating in the silly shenanigans of loved ones, he readily joined in. He also took the time to write beautiful, personal birthday cards and he gave truly thoughtful gifts. His friends and family members enjoyed spending time with him and looked forward to being in his presence.

Though Michael enjoyed watching movies, both in theaters and at the homes of loved ones, he himself owned neither a TV nor a computer; instead, he preferred books. He was eternally curious about the riddles of the universe, seeking answers from the worldly philosophers, the Bible, the Classics and the many friends and fellow wonderers he met and conversed with in coffee shops and elsewhere. He loved to ask thought-provoking questions that sparked meaningful and fun discussions, and he gently encouraged others to slow down, listen carefully, and contemplate a given problem with curiosity. After an engaging discussion, he might reach out, sometimes days or even months later, with a thought he’d had or with a book title or passage he’d come across that he believed might add to the conversation. He practiced the teachings of the Anthroposophical Society, founded by Rudolf Steiner, and he was an active member of both The Christian Community and the Uriel Group. His spirituality was extremely important to him. He continuously strove for growth and enlightenment and had blossomed into one of the kindest, gentlest and most caring people anyone could ever hope to know.

Michael also held a deep appreciation for nature, regularly heading outdoors for a relaxing walk in the woods along the river. He often extended invitations to loved ones, helping them to commune with nature as well. He found beauty everywhere, from the grandest constellations in the sky to the smallest insects in the grass, and he sometimes stopped to snap photos. His love for nature extended to animals too, particularly to his beautiful late Australian shepherd “Aussie” and to the late “Buttercup,” another furry friend of the family.

Michael worked as a caregiver through much of his adult life. The richness and breadth of his own life experience gave him an intuitive empathy and he sought to ensure that his clients were comfortable, felt safe and retained their dignity. Michael’s compassion extended beyond his work, not only to those he loved but also to anyone who struggled, including strangers. He also regularly volunteered at Feeding America.

Michael had many interests. He was fond of poetry, including writing his own, which he sometimes read at “Poet’s Monday Open Mic” at Linneman’s in Riverwest. Participating in singing circles and kirtans spiritually uplifted and connected him; he appreciated community. He sketched, he gardened, he played chess—he also created artistic chess pieces and boards. He enjoyed thrifting and eating well and had recently begun baking bread. He had a knack for throwing on stylish and striking outfits, effortlessly layering shirts and sweaters, mixing prints, and sometimes wearing cool caps. He looked dapper walking or biking down the street.

Michael’s friends and family members will carry him in their hearts and thoughts for the rest of their lives. He is deeply loved and deeply missed.

Visitation will be on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 3:00 to 5:00PM at Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 E. Capitol Dr., Shorewood, WI 53211. A service celebrating Michael’s life will take place at 5:00PM with the opportunity for all to share their fond memories and stories of Michael. A reception will follow.

Michael’s family is accepting donations to help offset the cost of funeral arrangements.

Michael occasionally talked about the multi-universe. About the infinite number of universes and infinite number of Michaels within those universes. Each of them playing out their own particular way. I am so grateful to have met this particular Michael in this particular universe!

Such a good picture of Michael. Viewing it immediately brings me sadness, but also a chuckle imagining a funny comment he's about to make. What a good heart.
