James Lawrence Harvey, 90, died peacefully in his sleep Thursday April 22nd at Trinity Grove Assisted Living in Wilmington, NC. At his transition he was surrounded by his sons, Lawrence, Jeff, and Chet along with their wives, Susan, Barbara, and Bobby. They all witnessed his passing while prayers and praise were given to almighty God.
Lawrence was born July 14, 1930 in Raleigh, NC to the late James Jefferson Harvey and Julia Bryant Jones.
Lawrence is survived by his sister, Marilyn Langley, three sons; Larry Harvey (Susan), Jeff Harvey (Barbara) and Chet Harvey (Bobby); four grandchildren, Brent Harvey (Felice), Lawren Bagley (Matt), Matthew Harvey (Jessica), Josh Harvey (Olivia) and two+ great grandchildren Arya, Elise and expected any day now, Lola Jean.
Lawrence was a strong man of faith and a “rock” in the Harvey family. Lawrence was raised in Raleigh, NC, served in the United States Navy, graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a degree in business. Mr. Harvey was a local business professional having opened in 1978, a CPA firm on Randall Parkway in Wilmington, which was operated successfully for many decades. He was a strong and faithful member of Harbor United Methodist Church. He began attending during its origins meeting with other like-minded folks in the gym at Myrtle Grove Middle School. Mr. Harvey served as a Lay Leader and choir member. He taught Disciple Bible Studies One and Two for many years. He was an Emmaus graduate, teacher, and aide. Mr. Harvey had many passions aside from raising his family and church life. He was a world traveler and documented his travels through fantastic photographs from Antarctica to India. He was an artist and musician who played the piano and guitar. Lawrence was a seasoned private pilot obtaining an instrument rating. He owned several aircraft throughout his lifetime. He also enjoyed boating and fishing and once witnessed with his sons from the intercoastal waterway three water- spouts spinning up as he was getting ready to head out to Masonboro Island.
Mr. Harvey was a strong and faithful Christian man who made his love of our Lord Jesus Christ his life's priority. Many people knew this great man and he was well respected and loved by all. Although Lawrence was normally reserved and quiet outwardly, inwardly God was his flame.
Lawrence and his wife Dolores are spending what would be their 71st wedding anniversary together in Heaven. To God be the Glory.
