Albert Albrecht Obituary

Albert Albrecht, a beloved member of the Lemont community, has passed away at the age of 84 after a short but hard fight with pancreatic cancer.

Al was born and raised in Lemont and spent his early years on the family-owned apple orchard on Archer Avenue.

In the early 60s, Al traveled north to Ashland, Wisconsin, to attend Northland College, where he met his wife, Cele. After graduation, they taught in Pittsville, Wisconsin for several years. The orchard, his dad’s “hobby,” continued to be a part of their life, and weekends were spent driving back and forth to Lemont, now with two kids and a dog.

They moved back to Lemont in 1969 when Al returned to his alma mater, Lemont High School, as a teacher, coach, and eventual athletic director. He worked there until his 2001 retirement. He is remembered fondly by many coworkers, as well as former students and players from his volleyball, wrestling and baseball teams. “He taught me how to drive” was a familiar greeting around Lemont.

Al was also active in many other organizations (the list is long), including the Lemont Jaycees, the Lemont Police Department (where he encountered many of the previously mentioned former students), and the Lions Club, where he served for 60 years, remaining active until his passing. He was a Keepataw Day Grand Marshal and was inducted into the Lemont High School Alumni and Athletic Halls of Fame. He loved being a member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association and was also proudly inducted into their Hall of Fame.

Al and Cele were fortunate to be able to travel after their kids graduated from college, and made wonderful memories scuba diving throughout the Caribbean, skiing in Colorado, taking several European river trips, and watching the Cubs’ annual spring training in Arizona.  Anybody who knew Al knows he was a big Cubs fan, ever since his grandpa took him to his first game when he was a boy.

Al’s list of activities and accomplishments goes on and on, but he was most proud of his family and loved every minute he got to spend with them: his wife of 61 years, Cele; his son, Chris (Jennifer) and their daughters Alex (Casey Symons), Sam (Ronnie Miller), and Charlotte; and daughter Michele and her two children, Hannah (Tobi Hoinka) and Emi (Uriel Adams). We loved him and will miss him dearly.

We kindly request no flowers; for those who wish to, donations to the Bethany Lutheran Food Pantry in Al’s honor would be warmly welcomed.

Cele & Family--Al was more than a neighbor, he was a good friend. We will remember all the good times we had traveling, working on the homeowners association, and just laughing and talking about our families, politics, and life in general. Al was quite the gardener and took pride especially in his cactus garden. Ceil looked forward to her annual amaryllis plant from Al at Christmas.

We hope your memories bring moments of comfort and peace.

Al helped me grow throughout my teaching and coaching career. He helped girls sports grow and had a favorable vision while doing so. He gave me an opportunity to coach Fr. Volleyball for a few years which ultimately strengthen my
coaching career. He had vision and a no nonsense attitude. He was a good Athletic Director who had a progressive vision. Lemont was lucky to have him in his various roles.

Every year, Al, Bill B., Jim D., Eric M., Marv G., and myself would drive up to Milwaukee to catch a Cubs/Brewers game. The trip would sometimes include a dinner at one of the great German restaurants there. We had a blast- there was no holding back on some of the conversations!
In the fall, the place to be was the press box at a Lemont football game. Al did spotting: regular visitors included Eric, Dave F., and Marv. Despite some very entertaining banter in the box initiated by Al, we actually did keep track of time, score, and other vital info during the game. After the game, Al would invite us over to the house for adult beverages. Friday night football was something very special!
Al never failed to remind me at what time the school day officially started. He was funny, witty and candid; he told great stories about his life experiences. Al was a good friend; I will miss him tremendously!
Our prayers are with Cele and Al's family.

I am so sorry to hear about Al. Though I did not get an opportunity to work with him at Lemont, I appreciated all the support he gave me and my volleyball program. It was great to see him at our matches. He will be missed by the school community and the city of Lemont. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Our love & condolences to Cele, and the entire Albrecht Family! Al was quite a guy! Best remembered by many Lemont High students, as coach, teacher, mentor, and of course Driver Ed Instructor. Had Al in the classroom, with Driver Ed. Down to earth! Pushed kids to always do better! Remembered him as an Auxiliary Police Officer also! So involved with Lemont, and Sports. Most importantly...a great guy! Many memories, and recent good memories, when he visited Arizona for Spring Training. Honored to have lunch with him & Cele when they visited. A true Lemont icon, who will be missed! God Bless!

No matter where I looked during my High School days there was Al Albrecht! At the school as my Volleyball coach, as a police officer in town, a friend of our family, a fellow Lions club member with my Pops and such a Big part of the Lemont Community. I will always appreciate Al accepting me for who I was. Eye rolling and all! BTW it was not in the rule book for volleyball that you cant roll your eyes . He was sure to tell the ref! He was an AmaZing guy and will be missed. I know his family was very proud of him. Big Hugs to all from the Senffner Family ❤

I am very sad to hear of Mr. Albrecht's passing. My thoughts and prayers to his family. Michelle and I went to school together. He also taught me how to drive. My mom called him one wintry day and asked him to teach me how to drive in the snow. I was SUPER embarrassed because he let me know that my mom called. The two boys doing behind the wheel with me thought it was funny. He stood up for me though. I don't often have to use his lessons, BUT, every winter I am very thankful that your dad took the time to teach me how to pull out of a a skid. He definitely left his mark on so many people. Goodbye, sir.

Cele. One of our favorite memories is our Spring 2024 trip to AZ and this Dolly Steamboat ride on Canyon Lake. Al was a force to reckon with, and the two of you are dear and loyal friends and the best possible next door neighbors. We already miss him so much. Together we will get through this. Meet you in our backyard for a glass of wine when the weather warms up!

I will always remember Coach Al as a very dedicated man, to whatever he was doing. He was very active in many community groups. This included one of his favorites, his HOA. I looked forward to hearing from Al for an annual request. He’d invite me over for a “Spotted Cow” and explain what he needed. Always a gentleman in doing so.

I think Al represented the epitome of a True Lemonter; dedicated, hard working and friendly. I will miss him and his calls.

Our deepest sympathy to the Albrecht family on your loss. What a terrific man he was. We will always have the best memories of partying with Cele and Al in the 70s! May wonderful memories of him be with you at this very tough time.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Albrecht Family. Mr Albrecht, Coach Al, Big Al, you brought great memories to my high school years. I remember one Volleyball practice and we were practicing digs and my turn didnt turn out so well for coach!! Let's just say it doubled him over. Well I guess to get even he made me parallel park between the bus and his Cadillac and let's just say it was a tight squeeze. My whole High School years were of found memories and he always had a smile on his face, and always knew what to say during the right moment. He will be missed.
