I just attended my 50th high school reunion in Kansas City and looked for Bruce. I wanted to thank him for a lovely meal he made for me just before the birth of my oldest son. For many months he would drop in on me and my ex husband to say hello. I would pull home cooked meals out of the freezer (pre-microwaves) and he would share them with us. They were mediocre at best. At the time, I had no idea he was in his sixth or seventh year of interning to be a chef until he surprised me with the most beautiful and tasty meal. I have cherished that experience for 41 years and wanted him to know how special it was to me. I'm sorry I didn't get the opportunity to let him know.

goodbye Bruce

Bruce was the first real chef I met when beginning my career in the late 70s. He taught me a great deal about baking and generously shared several wonderful recipes, most notably his treasured cheesecake recipe, which he made me swear to never give out. He was one of the finest chefs I've ever known and certainly the most knowledgable. We used to eat at Campus Hideaway when he owned it and it was the best place in town in the early 80s. Bruce had the utmost sense of quality and taste in everything he made. I still remember his cold Almond soup from the Hideaway-----exquisite. Bruce was one of a kind and a true culinary treasure for Lawrence for many years. He taught and shared of his knowledge generously. He was also a truly kind heart and intellect. He will be missed.

Bruce had a broad base of knowledge that he was only too willing to share, which made him a good teacher. He helped me early on in my career and I will always remember his kindness and good humor.

Bruce taught me how to cook 33 years ago, and I've eaten well ever since. Man, that guy could put together great meals!

I am sorry to hear about your loss. Bruce had been a customer of mine for several years and we developed a casual friendship. He was an intelligent, articulate man of great character. I will miss my conversations with him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Bruce was my best friend--the finest and most interesting of people. For the past 4 years we met weekly--sometimes more. Food was usually involved; so was laughter. He was an oral historian and a superb conversationalist. His stories of people and places were moments of spontaneous liteature. He never stopped doing good for others. I shall remember him and his stories always.
