Charles L. Merz, 74, of Horton, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the home. Services were held on Thursday, April 19 at the Dishon-Maple- Chaney Mortuary followed by military graveside rites at the Horton Cemetery. Charles was born on June 22, 1937 in Horton, the son of Floyd and Helen Henry Merz. A Horton High School graduate, he received honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps and worked for the City of Horton as Utility Supervisor in the Water Department. Known as Water Truck Chuck, his call number 73 was retired after over 41 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two brothers, one sister and one great-grandson. He is survived by his wife Shirley McCord Merz, of the home; two sons, Gary (Lisa) Merz, Muscotah, and Robin Merz, Meriden; a daughter, Laura Merz, Topeka; step-son James (Colleen) Stuart, Horton; a brother, Alvin (Jeanie) Merz, Meriden; two sisters, Ida (Tom) Smith, Holton, and Glenda Rogers (Larry Jerome), Horton; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
