Well Steve, it's been six years and nearly each day there is a song, a sound, a visual, that reminds me of our friendship. Six years ago I wrote that you would be irreplaceable in my life and that is still true for me today just as it is for Carrie and Theresa and your family. I missed you so much when you died and over time I have become stronger and wiser because I have the memories of many heart to heart talks, impeccable lighthearted banter, and lessons that we learned together, that sustain our relationship even though it now only exists in my memories. And that makes so much sense to me because you were one hell of a cerebral guy.

It's been almost 4 and a half years since you've gone, Steve. Tonight I find myself missing you. I passed by Vikingtown and the sun was shining. I looked up at your old place, our old space, and thought: he would've loved this sunny day. He would've sent me an email with ideas on local events for the weekend. We would've gone hiking. Maybe to a dive bar, though did you know I don't drink anymore, Steve?
Who knows what you know anymore? Who knows where you are? I wish so desperately that I did because I miss you terribly. So much so that I'm resorting to an online obituary guest book to feel some connection to you. Anyhow, I love you forever and I keep your things close in hopes that they still have some of your essence.

Steve was the most intelligent man I have ever known. He used his intellect to help me achieve my social work clinical license that led to the dream job of my career. Beyond that, we became best friends who shared road trips, music, card games, endless stories, and hours of exhausting laughter as we recounted our adventures together and each others follies. Steve's legacy for me is that he caused me to become a better person through his advice, influence, and example. Only recently, I have heard the same thing from others who knew him well. He is not replaceable and I miss him to the core of my being. To his family, you have my sincere sympathy and I hope that soon you have peace of mind with your memories of him.

People who make a difference one life at a time are some of my favorite people. Steve was on of those people. Together we helped a lot of people over the years avoid eviction and get off the streets. We even both spent some time with the WRAP program. Just last week I was giving his card to someone I thought he could help. He was a terrific colleague and he will be sorely missed. My condolences to his friends and family.
